Upgrade FX 6300 to i7 4770k worth it?

Hey guys i currently have a AMD FX-6300 with a crap MSI 970-g43 motherboard i got for $60 at the time. I have come across some cash and was wanting to know if i would see a big performance increase If i upgraded to a i7 4770k/4790k.And also i know there is no such thing as future proofing but how long will the i7 4770k hold up into the future if i did upgrade it. I was thinking it would be good more along the lines of 2-3 years.

if you want to future proof, go with the 4790k, you can overclock later also. game now are using alot more cpu than they used too, watchdogs for example. i also have quite a few things running in the background when im gaming, so the extra power really comes in handy. im running 2 gtx 780 tis in sli, and i dont think an i5 4690k would be enough for those 2 cards and background programs.

I used to have an FX-8320, and now that I have a 4770K, it is great, BUT it is not too much of an upgrade. RAM performance doubles and can support much higher frequency, so effectively triples. That would last for a long while. You could save up maybe $600 for an upgrade to 5th generation Broadwell.

Hi. I am running an i7 4770k and feel like I am good to go for some time to come. You will notice a difference for sure. :)

Not a huge difference. I definitely like my 4770k more than my 8320, but to justify that much more money, eh, no. The 4790K is also not for gaming, the 4690K is the same.

So you say the i7 4770k/47790k is not for gaming. and when you say the same for the i5 4690k. you cant mean its not for gaming because it is. and i would upgrade to an i5 because i see no sense in that. i wanted to know how long the i7 4770/4790k would last due to more game utilizing threads and i know i would see an increase since intel just has overall better processors. I just want to know wheter r not this will be a worthwhile move in the long run of things.

Honestly, AMD has given up on any more FX like capable systems. While some try to argue the latest APU (A10) is perfectly fine for gaming or such, I still seen the numbers show it tanks hard as compared to any of the iCore series when we are considering the minimal FPS you WILL get in a game with a APU as compared to a iCore. That said, 2013, Intel made the announcement, HASWELL IS THE FINAL DESKTOP CHIPSET TO EVER BE PRODUCED. They are no longer producing anything else for desktop market once Haswell hits its end of life in a couple years.

So for everyone on desktop, the answer seems either shell out 2x the money for a serious gaming laptop, or go Console. SIGH!

OKay. I was just over at Newegg and they have the 17 4770k Haswell and 17 4790k Devils Canyon at the same price od $339.99. The devils Canyon would be the choice, no brainer. Save $100 and go with the i5 4690k.

Like huh. maybe i misread everything you just said but it sounded to me as you just said intel wont be making desktop cpus have you gone mad that is there market. unless they want someone else coming up to steal it the will continue my friend. isnt that just the damnedest thing to here.,

Hmmmm, now that is interesting as i guess Devils Canyon doesn't exist, except in Newegg ads. The I guess Broadwell will only be a figment of someones imagination. Can't believe I read that.

never said devils canyon wasn't real its very real. that is what the i7 4790k is. -_-

however i was talking to the above guy who said intel will stop making desktop cpu's when clearly they have plans for Broadwell a 14nm cpu for desktops and laptops.

i7-4790K has hyper-threading. i5-4690K does not.

Games do not benefit from hyper-threading, video-editing, streaming, 3d-rendering, etc. do benefit from hyper-threading.

If you are only going to play games, save $100 and get the i5-4590K which is the best processor for gaming.

So that is what I am talking about. Apparently you missed the news that was all over the place last year. Most AMD fanboys were laughing saying see Intel was tossing in the towel and thought at CES / E3 then AMD would launch a new FX type line, but instead AMD did the same thing (as I mentioned) and went with the APU model as well. Even in 2014 CES and E3 still the same news, both manufacturers are ditching desktops (consider they make up only 25% of PC sales anyway) for the main Laptop, Tablet, Phablet, Smart Phone platforms (Windows 9 will work across all platforms according to the latest releases, and will 'identify' the hardware to provide the right 'interface' before Microsoft drops the Windows OS completely with Windows X which will be, like Android and iOS, a 'light' OS to get to the Online APPS only).
