Hi all

I have an Omen 880-181nf, with a GTX 1080. I would like to change this card and install a Asus RTX3060 TUF. My motherboard is a MS-7A61 Ver 1.3 and the Bios is updated to AMI F.56, issued oct 24th 2022.

As the GTX1080 has a consumption max of 180W and the RTX 3060 TUF of 170 W I was very happy that the new card would easily fit in my system. Somebody told me to be careful because this motherboard does not support the new generation of GC as th RTX 3060.

Did anybody already this upgrade in the same machine?

Thank you for your help

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

You might want to look up transient load spikes for the RTX3000 series. How old is the prebuilt/PSU? The good thing about your prebuilt is that the connectors on the PSU and motherboard sides aren't proprietary. The drawback to your prebuilt is that it's 8th Gen Intel i7, you should look into an RTX2080 instead, unless you plan to build a concurrent system and then carry over the RTX3060 onto said new build.

The omen machine is from 2019 as well as the PSU. Ii is from Lite-On Technology, 80 plus bronze , max 550 Watts. I choose the RTX 3060 TUF because it is more performant and because its consomption is @ 170 W instead of 180 Watts of my actually gtx 1080. HP told me that with the RTX3060 I will probably kill the motherboard which is a MS-7A61 Ver 1.3. I know that the RTX3060 will not run as its full performance, but I would like to avoid to crash my motherboard.
How you would estimate this risk?
Thanks

Dear all,
I would like to upgrade my computer with a new more performant Graphic card.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: before Xmas budget +/- 800 $

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Mostly used for MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 and Video editing with Magix Video Pro. I work with Microsoft Office

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: GTX 1080 with a PSU from Lite-On Technology @500 Watts and 80Plus Bronze. My machine is a Omen by HP 880-181 nf bought in 2019. Motherboard: MS-7A612 ver1.3 with a Bios Ami F.56, with update from oct 24th, 2022.

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: the CPU is a I7 8700 K water-cooled, Ram 32 GB @ 2400 Hz , 3SSD Samsung Evo 870 2To and a HDD 2To , I SSD @256Go for operating system Windows 10 family

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: Newegg, Amazon etc Home country: France

PARTS PREFERENCES: I would prefer a GC from Asus such as a RTX 3060 TUF, if this card will work in my machine.

OVERCLOCKING: With my actual GTX1080 I did an undervolting @ 625mV and a overclocking at 1936 Hz. This works without any problems. Temp with MSFS2020 is <70°C @ 80% of usage.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Omen by HP 25; CODIC: 4339819; 1920x1080, 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort; 24.5 Po

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Need a card which is reliable, silent and can be installed easily in my machine. The dimension of my GTX1080 is 27.9x4.2x14 (cm) My motherboard has 2 PCIe 3.0 X16 and power supply for the GTX1080 is a 8 pin connector.

Actually, I am considering to go with an ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX™ 3060 V2 OC Edition 12Go GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 x16

My GTX1080 has a max consumption of 180 Watts and the RTX 3060 TUF of 170 Watts.

Thank you very much for advice, comments, and suggestions.
have a nice day
