Hello,

I managed to buy an RTX 3070 recently and would like to know if I need to upgrade my PC.
I could see that my i5 will block the performance of the RTX 3070 but is it possible to wait for DDR5?

Here is my PC
  • CPU : i5 2500k + Noctua NF-P12
  • GPU : MSI Twin Frozr 2 GTX 1060 6Go (temporarily replace my GTX 560 Ti, thanks to my best friend)
  • MotherBoard : ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
  • Memory : G Skill F3-12800CL9 4x4Go (16Go)
  • PSU : Corsair HX 520W
  • Case : Cooler master Masterbox MB520
  • Storage : BX500 480Go + 1To HDD
  • Monitor : Dell S2721D 1440p 75hz
I play in 1440p without multiplayer.
The games I like: ( Total War , Forza Horizon 4 , Crysis , Planet Zoo , Crusaders Kings , Phoenix point , BF5)

My PC is old but still allows me to play, can it still wait for DDR5?

Solution
Thank you for your answer @Master Djoza
It is therefore possible to install the RTX 3070 on my current configuration to see the results and if I have too many difficulties I should change the CPU + Motherboard?
Will my Corsair HX 520w be powerful enough?I'm trying to find an RM750 but it's not easy.
DDR5 may arrive later but I think that before the end of the year there will be a small battle between INTEL and AMD which could be more advantageous than the current situation especially with the Ryzen 5 5600x which remains expensive
It will work with your motherboard and everything, but not with that PSU.
Grab that RM750, then use your 3070.
3070 demands way more than 500W.

thank you for your advice, i will be able to save my money for the new cpu.

RMX750 not much more expensive, I was also on Seasonic but I know Corsair better.

I hope I would have had a good idea to wait before buying my processor. If the i7 10700kf drops at the same time as the Z490 it is possible that I will buy before the end of the year :)

Edit :
with my cooler, can I OC my i5 2500k to gain some performance?

Great, I'm going to watch some tutorials.
After purchasing my RMX750 I will be able to use my RTX 3070 with my old i5. At the same time, I will be watching for good deals on CPUs. Glad not to be forced to buy now with the new generations arriving.

RTX 3070 requires at least a 650 watt ps.
I wouldn't wait for ddr5. It probably won't show up until 2022-and late 2022 at that. And with the insane computer parts market, maybe 2023.
And just like DDR4,it will be very expensive for about a year.

Best to setup a PC lifecycle, and not worry a whole lot about the latest greatest DDR5, PCIE5, USB 8000..........I mean if it was going to be about this month, I would say wait, but when were not even for sure......why wait?

Pick 3,4,5,6 year lifecycle plan and just try to stick to that. I find that works best for most people.

Now if you make a living based on your PC speed, then by all means upgrade sooner to save money, however that is not the standard use case for most people here.

I just installed the graphics card, instead of having an x4 in the performance boost.
I have about x4 on the different games that I use which currently matches my needs.
My i5 2500k will be able to hold a little before buying I think of an i5 11600k
