Upgrade or just a waste of money?

Hey guys.

As the temperatures are going up outside, my FX 4170 (4,4 turbo 125 watt) is melting my MB I am thinking about upgrading to FX 8300. I wonder if I get noticably better performance in games like Witcher 3, Battlefield 4 or CS:GO (GPU GTX 660 oc). Do you think it is worth it? I noticed an ocassional stutter with my current cpu and my father has a GTX 680 with FX 6300 and his games run much better than mine despite all optimization I make. Is it because my GPU is bottleneck or the CPU is piece of sheit?

It will be better, but I would suggest a Intel cpu, much better performance. Btw no games can make utilization of 8 cores yet. I also play bf4 but at max 4 cores are running on max.

EDIT: FX 6300 and fx 8300 have pretty much same performance. FX 6400 is also a good overclocker.

Actually there are games out that can utilize 8 threads. The new Hitman and Rise of the tomb raider can use 8 threads and more are on the way.

Whats your budget for the upgrade? A 6300 or 8300 may help a bit as the Piledriver based cpus have stonger cores than the Bulldozer based 4170. If you want to see if you are bottlenecking get hwinfo and monitor the gpu usage and the individual cpu core usage. If you have cpu cores that are maxed at 100% and gpu usage is lower then your cpu is a bottleneck.

My budget is around 130 dollars. I can afford both 6300 and 8300. Btw is it possible to just update BIOS and change the CPU without doing anything else to the system (Win 7).

You can upgrade the cpu and windows should be just fine. Windows doesn't usually have issues till you swap out the motherboard. What motherboard do you have?

Yeah you may need a bios update.
