Looking to upgrade to ryzen, have an i7 4770 Gtx 1080 and 16gb ddr3 1600mhz. Would I see a boost in performance with ryzen at 1440p 75hz or there no point in upgrading.

Solution
I suspect a sideways move.
Your i7-4770 has 8 threads and a passmark rating of 9787 and a single thread rating of 2227.
By comparison, for example, a ryzen 2600X with 12 threads has a rating of 14338 but a similar single thread rating of 2139.
Since most games can not effectively utilize more than 4 threads the 12 treads for ryzen is not that helpful.

And, not only would you need a new motherboard, but you would need to convert to DDR4 ram.

FWIW, here is my canned approach to the cpu vs. gpu question.
You might want to run some of the experiments with YOUR games:

Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer tends to like many threads.

id upgrade to ryzen i did and it improved the performance i was getting even tho i just have a gtx 670 4gb strix.... although my cpu was a i5 2500k 16gb ram i can definatly say the 3000mhz ram is just faster in loading times of the games and os... and the onboard m.2 also helps a ton

What ryzen cpu? You have so many different ones it's hard to know which one you are looking at.
Are you not getting 75fps at 1440p currently?

so i run a ryzen 1700 at 3.925ghz 16gb ram 3000mhz, and a gtx 670 4gb strix... although I run 1080p 77 75hz I think it would run at 1440p, i have a 4k tv in the living room 4k 60hz runs smooth on soul calibur 6 so defo you should be able to get 1440p 75hz

You need to find out which.

To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

You should also experiment with removing one or more cores/threads. You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option.
You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of threads to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many threads.
If you see little difference, your game does not need all the threads you have.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system,
and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.
