Upgrade or overclock?

Hi guys just need bit of help with my cpu l've got i7 960 3.2 but when playing battlefield 1 I think its bottlenecking my gtx 980ti cuz bf1 vram usage stays round 55 on 1900 x 1200 with plenty of dips on ultra 70 fps to 50 .Which solution is best?.>
1.Upgrade to i7 990x and overclock
2.Overclock the i7 960 3.2
3.Upgrade to z270.

I do want to wait till the x299 is released what do you think guys? or upgrade anything else?.

Just overclock it if you have a good cooler, push it to the max and keep it stable until X299, since that's what you want.

If you are willing to pay the price of X299 along with the Skylake-X or Kaby Lake-X CPUs. When they are released. You should save the money and overclock the i7-960 to bide the time. Until they are available. The 990x is too old to be worth the absurd prices charged for used chips.

If you want to make overclocking easier. Buy a used and unlocked i7-965 then sell off the i7-960. It'll end up costing you about $30 to have an unlocked CPU.
