Upgrade questions

I am considering upgrading from my MS6119 mobo (and Pentium II 450MHz chip). The MS6119 is a good board, but it can only go up to about a 500MHz Pentium III. I would like to leave myself some room for future CPU upgrades, but not spend a lot of money (if possible) so I was thinking about a Socket A mobo with a Duron chip to start with--later moving up to an Athlon TBird. The reviews I've read of the Duron are quite complementary and I thought it might be a good way to get a bit of a speed increase (not very much, I realize) and position myself for more performance increases later. I'm looking at an Epox EP-8KTA2, which has the VIA KT133 chipset. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

the best for duron/t-birds are the abit k7t raid and the asus a7v, thats it.

wow, that sounded blunt :)

(i have the a7v, it's great)

I am currently using an early version of the MS-6119 with a PII-400 and have looked into the upgrade path for it. It will support a PIII-600 100mhz fsb w/512 cache with no problem. My motherbord didn't come with the blue dot on the winbond i/o chip, so it won't support the coppermine processors ( the voltage regulator module won't accept the voltage requirements of the coppermine), but if your mb has the blue dot on the i/o chip, then yours will support the coppermine PIII-800 100mhz fsb slot 1 processor with no overclocking of the system. You may need to flash the bios to the latest one offered at their website. There is also the possiblity of using a " slocket " adapter with its own VRM that will allow you to use a flipchip coppermine processor, Iwill and Powerleap , as well as others make a converter for the slot1 mb. You just need to make sure that the converter has its own VRM and is not a propriatary unit ( working only on the manufacturer's own mb's )
It really all comes down to your own preference, ( and pocketbook) as to what would work best for you.

Thanks! You've given me some things to look into I hadn't considered.
