Question Upgrade to a new gpu

So I was curious right now my gpu uses a 14 pin pcie connection from the psu. I wanted to upgrade so if I bought a gpu with a 12 pin connection could I buy an adapter to connect to the 14 pin from my psu to connect to the new 12 pin connection

"Do not" purchase any adapters: big mistake irrespective of what any say.
