[SOLVED] upgrade to a ryzen 3700x or nvidia 2080 super

I'm currently running a ryzen 1700x and gtx 1080 build, although I get good fps most of the time there are some spots in games where it tends to drop. They are at common spots, intense scenes, open areas, loading new sections. Im gaming on a 4k 60fps tv, so i'm more concerned with hitting 4k rather than getting massive frames. I would be picking the 3700x simply because I don't really want to worry about upgrading or changing my mobo. Then the other choice is upgrading to a 2080 super, mostly because of ray tracing.

1)RTX On isn't playable on 4K - you'd have the scale the resolution down quite a bit...
Which would look better: your normal 4K graphics, or scaled down ray traced ones?

2)4K is purely gpu heavy, so wanting to get a stronger one makes more sense over the 3700X.
Your current 1700X may still be up to the task:
-Have you attempted to overclock it yet?
-Are you ok on memory speed? 3200-3600mhz is preferred with Ryzen cpus.

Will your Ryzen hit 3.9 - 4.0 GHz on all cores, with 2933-3200 MHz RAM?

At 4K, you are typically 95% entirely GPU-limited...

Drop RTX for now until cards are faster with it enabled...; at the moment , it is a giant framerate reduction-inducing hog

right now I don't have it overclocked, but I could definitely look into how far I push it. I haven't overclocked something since amd fx 8xxx series. Right now apparently I only have 2100 MHz RAM. Will RAM with different speed work well with each other, or should I look at replacing it all? With ignoring RTX, is the 2080 super still a good upgrade or should I look over at amd's offering?

The 2080 Super is an outstanding card, but, most only get it if planning on at least 1440P at 100/144 Hz, or 4K gaming (At 4K, your GPU is the 95% limiting factor, as the 1700X is plenty for minimum FPS.)

If playing at 1080P, you could always compromise, and get a 3700 and a 2060 Super (or RX 5700XT which is 2070 level or above, and adequate for good 1440P)

Get the 2080 and new a new RAM kit that's 3200mhz.
