Hello guys, this is actually my friend's question since he don't have an account here
and he wants to know about any suggestion

Currently, he is also using an i5-4460 and just received a gift which is GTX-1080 and would like to upgrade his CPU to reduce bottleneck (1080p monitor and don't want to change his monitor, I even suggested to sell his 1080 since he already had GTX-1060 but he refused because GTX 1080 will last longer than his 1060)

So the question is, upgrade to 4790K or get a new platform which is the 7700K?

His mobo is only B-85 but I still suggested that he can get a used 4790K so that he don't need to spend for a new RAM and new MOBO (and selling his CPU+MOBO+RAM is too much hassle)

but someone suggested that he needs to get the i7-7700K which is better

I just need someone to give some advice because I know that getting the 4790K is much wiser than spending some money on a new platform, Only use is for gaming (this is the reason why 7700K is not recommended) I just recommended 4790K for it's higher clock-speed without having the Z-97 mobo to overclock it,

I'll send a screenshot to him for your response

If he games at 1080p, the GTX 1080 will be a waste of power. And the i7 is equally totally unnecessary. If he has a GTX 1060 6GB and a i5-4460 now, he won't notice a single bit of improvement with the 1080 and i7. Btw, nice "gift".
So it doesn't matter which he chooses. The outcome will be the same.

There is no point to upgrading CPU if you are at 60 Hz. There's nothing wrong with that CPU. If you want to make the most of the GPU run games in DSR (either 4K for older games or 2.5K for newer games).

A 7700K would be new memory, new motherboard, possibly even new operating system as it no longer supports Windows 7. And wouldn't change the fact you were on 1080p60.

If you do switch to Intel i7 7700K you get to use newer memory, features and motherboard to have good smooth overall performance gain with future game proof. - Not need worry about buying any newer computer afterwards,

I know people that already have Skylake (6th Gen CPU) going always criticize is not worth it, but since your CPU is like 4th Gen is still good.

But if you want you can just upgrade the CPU to 4790K (It best to get a new, instead of used)

Thanks for the reply everyone, I'm actually trying to convince him that he don't need an upgrade at all since he's playing @ 1080p 60hz (moving to 4790K would be a waste if I'm on his position but I will keep that GTX-1080 since it's free LOL)

Unless he wants a feature that is present on the newer chipsets then just stick with Haswell and get the 4790k. But I would recommend he run the system as is with the new GPU first. A new CPU really isn't going to unlock a noticeable amount of performance for him, though as more games go DX12 and maybe start using more cores then a i7 becomes a better idea.
