Hi!

New member here. I'm hoping to get some opinions/advice here with regards to upgrading my GPU as seen in the title.

I'm currently running the Palit GeForce RTX 2060 GamingPro OC (Non Super). I was thinking of upgrading to either the RTX 3060 Ti or the RTX 3070.

The 3060 is more in my price range, but I'm not sure if I should rather just take some more time to save up for the 3070 instead?

Below are the cards I'm considering.

RTX 3060:
MSI GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Gaming X Trio 8GB GDDR6 256-bit PCI-E 4.0 Desktop Graphics Card

RTX 3070:
Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3070 VISION OC 8GB GDDR6 256-bit PCI-E 4.0 Desktop Graphics Card

I live in South Africa so the price difference between the two are quite noticeable and just ridiculous when compared to the US.. The 3060 runs for about R10,000 ($670) and the 3070 runs for about R13,000 ($870).

My current system:

CPU: Core i5-8600k
Motherboard: MSI Z370-A Pro
RAM: G.Skill F4-3200C16D Ripjaws V DDR4-3200Mhz 16GB (2x 8GB)
PSU: Super Flower SF-750F14MT(BK) Leadex 750W 80 Plus Silver Certified Fully Modular
Monitor: AOC C24G1 23.6" Full HD 144Hz Freesync Curved Gaming Monitor
OS: Win10 Pro

I only game at 1080p, nothing major. From what I can see, the 3060 would probably be the best bang-for-buck? Considering there's a $200 difference between the two.

Also, my CPU should be efficient enough I suppose? Although, I don't really have the funds to upgrade the CPU as well as GPU.. 🙁

I mostly play games such as CoD: Warzone, CoD: Cold War, WoW and soon Cyberpunk 2077. There are a bunch more, but only a few examples mentioned.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of this and looking forward to your input!

Kind Regards

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Right now GPU prices are insane all over the wolrd, some places really worst than others. One can only hope that sometime next year more stock will help to normalize prices.

What a hard question you have asked. Any of those GPUs will be a big upgrade over your current RTX 2060.

About your CPU question, altought the i5 8600K is a nice CPU the lack of HT (Hyperthreading), meaning it only have 6 cores/6 threads (instead of 6 cores/12 threads of the modern 10th gen core i5), could have a negative impact on games that need more than 6 cores.

From what GamerNexus tested, for some "older" CPU like the Core i5 8600K, you may experience is some stutter/frame time spikes. He tried at 1080p low/medium/high.

Thank you!

Yeah, the prices are insane. Especially this side of the world. We are basically paying double than what we should.. But oh well.

I see what you mean regarding the CPU issue. The problem is that unfortunately I won't be able to upgrade that now as I would then need a new Mobo as well. Things will start getting a bit expensive then.

I'm a bit worried about the frame stutter/lag, though. Considering that, would it be worth it to even upgrade to the RTX 3060 Ti in this case? Surely I'd see a massive performance increase over my current RTX 2060, but would it be worth it with my current setup?

I guess I could always upgrade my CPU + Mobo down the line. I'm also stuck with 1080p at the moment as my monitor only allows for max 1080p gaming. Which means I'd have to upgrade my monitor as well if I wanted to go with 1440p.. Oof lol.

mmmm thats a question I really can't asnwer, my question for you is: Are you happy with your game performance as it is right now with the i5 8600K + RTX 2060?

If the answer to my question is yes, then you could wait for the upgrade and maybe (only maybe) get the GPUs at a more fair price.

------------------------------------------
As for your current CPU, you still have a few upgrades you could do without changing the motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z370-A-PRO#support-cpu

Theres the Core i7 8700/K (6cores/12 threads), or a Core i7 9700/K/KF (8cores/8threads <- yes thats not a typo, this one also have HT disable) or Core i9 9900/K/KF (8 cores/16threads). The non-k should be cheaper (if you don't OC the K ones the performance diference is really small).

In order to install some of them you may need to update the BIOS first.

-------------------------------------------
Finally even at 1440p, and depending on theGame, GPU and details settings, 6 cores/6 threads will still have some stutter, maybe not as bad as 1880p but it may still be there.

Cheers!

The current performance of my RTX 2060 isn't terrible, but I can feel it on more demanding titles. Ideally I would like to play most games at 144fps, but it obviously depends on the game. The biggest one is probably Warzone as I play that the most. I currently have to drop the settings down quite a bit in order to consistently get 100+ FPS.

I looked up a few of those CPU's, but they are quite pricey this side. They range from about R6,000 - R8,800 ($400 - $588 if you convert it). Basically, can't afford to upgrade the CPU as well, lol.

I have a potential buyer for my RTX 2060 and I've seen a bunch of them being sold second hand for about R4,500 - R5,000. If I can dump that towards the 3060 Ti which is around R10,000 I could potentially get it for half the price. The left over money I could save up to eventually upgrade my CPU + Mobo in a year or 2. Perhaps go for something like the Ryzen 5000 series or something?

Sounds like a plan, sometimes it just can't be all at once.

Exactly :)

I see the RTX 3060 Ti is actually on special for R9600 now. Might consider getting that one and then just upgrade the rest later as mentioned. I should be able to see a nice jump in performance even with my current setup? :)

Thank you for all the feedback, much appreciated!

No problem, as I explained (or at least tried) gaming performance is about balancing the hardware involved, GPU-CPU-RAM.

I am currently wrestling with the same question of should I upgrade my RTX 2060 to either a RTX 3060 Ti or 3070.

I'm running a Intel Core i5-9400F CPU and think it will bottleneck as well.
Did you buy the graphics card and tested the performance yet?

Thank you!

try getting a GPU in new Zealand lol 750usd for the cheapest 3070

3060 seems plenty at 1080P currently...

Certainly, however, the 3070, although perhaps '1080P overkill' now, would likely still be better at newer games at 1080P three of four years from now than the 3060 would...(kind of like how a 1080Ti is still a very good GPU even 3.5 years later at 1080P)

@Bosmossel Did you upgrade to the 3060 Ti yet? And did you manage to sell your RTX 2060 for a decent price? I'm now looking at upgrading my RTX 2060 to the newly announced RTX 3060 which launches later this month (if we ever see any reasonably-priced stock in South Africa). The 3060 Ti would not be worth it for me as I assume it will be a big jump in price from the RTX 3060 (I estimate a launch price around R8000 to R9000 for the 3060 compared to about R12000 for the 3060 Ti currently) and I only want a small upgrade for better ray-tracing at 1080p.
