I have an ancient Diamond 7970 Dual Fan from years ago, originally bought it used on Amazon. Not sure how performance is matching up compared to other cards, but I feel it is lacking. Also hearing the sweet sound of coil whine during most games and sometimes while web browsing.

I plan to upgrade, and with the RX 480 out, I feel it would be a good choice for me.

Here is my current build :

FX 6300
Hyper 212 Evo
Diamond 7970 Dual Fan Edition
Gigabyte 970A-DS3P Mobo
Crucial Ballistix Sport XT 1866 4x2GB
500w EVGA 80+ PSU

Crucial 256mb M550 SSD
HGST 1tb HD

Acer H226HQL
SyncMaster 245BW

Motherboard is a great pain as well, have to push the power button two or three times to start it up. Discovered this AFTER buying it, with my luck of course.

Not the most extravagant thing in the world, but it's worked. Just looking for that little boost of performance now.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

To me (my opinion) if it's going to be reference....the gem here is the 4gb version for $199:

The second step up is the 8gb version, but for that I would wait for better cooling and PCB designs......to more capably get the most out of the card. Those things will be worth a few more weeks of wait, and $50-60 extra.

He has a 7970, a 470 isn't even all that much better.

And no, his CPU is perfectly capable of saturating an entry level graphics card.
