I have 2 Simple questions, I have a AMD FX-8350 and i want to switch to Ryzen but i have a low budget :(.
#1. What would be the cheapest Ryzen processor and still be considered an upgrade to to my FX-8350?
#2. How does the overall performance of answer #1 compare to the FX-8350?
Thank you

To response to your possible regets:
1: Even a Ryzen 5 1400 build won't be slower than your current one. Though, the gains in performance is so marginal, it is not worth putting that much extra money into it.

2: If you wanted to go for the cheapest Ryzen and simply upgrade the cpu to a stronger one later, that would spending an extra 200$. That 200$ is the difference between a Ryzen 5 1400 and a Ryzen 7 1700.

If you are planning on going for a Ryzen 7 build in the end anyways...you should either fold and just keep your current rig for a little longer or just go for the Ryzen 7 build to begin with. Its not cost efficient to go for the weaker cpu as a placeholder.
1. If you're gaming, any Ryzen processor would be an upgrade, but the R5 1600 would probably be the best deal for you.

2. Single core performance is ~35% faster at stock on both CPUs, obv you can OC both, and the 1600 OCs fine on the stock cooler. Multithreaded, the 1600 is ~80% faster in theory, but not all programs use the threads perfectly

Your FX-8350 was a fairly weak processor to begin with. Any Ryzen 5 or 7 should be able to outperform it easily. Even the cheapest Ryzen 5 1400 has 4core/8threads and would stack up to the FX-8350. However, you probably won't want to get the Ryzen 5 1400, as it would be too marginal(+15% or less) an upgrade from the FX-8350. I would suggest at least getting the Ryzen 1600X and a B chipset board, to allow for some overclocking as well. If you could afford it, an overclocked Ryzen 1700X is comparable to a Ryzen 1800X.

You can see some comparisons here for:

Your budget must include the new Ryzen CPU, a new motherboard, and new DDR4 memory, at a minimum. Just keep that in mind as well.

I have my FX-8350 on an ASUS crosshair 5 formula z. When I originally built it, it worked great I was very happy with it. about 1.5yrs later my 8350 took a dump. I got it RMAed and they replaced it. long story short after multiple RMAs. ive had 3 8350's and 2 c5fz boards. just very unhappy with the performance ive got and I wanna move on. id love just to get the top ryzen , max out the memory and be done with it. but it adds very fast its a hefty price tag(processor, memory and board).
I figure if I switch to cheaper ryzen(but better then the fx-8350)that would put me better then what I have, later on upgrade to a higher end ryzen. my biggest concern is if I buy a lower end ryzen is #1 I go to low and it ends up being slower then my 8350. #2 I regret spending on whichever one I get and feeling I should have gotten a better ryzen before I'm ready.
