hey guys. love toms so im trying the forums for the first time. a little background first....Im a physicist and have extensive knowledge in computer programming and literacy so dont sugar coat anything or your just going to irritate me. I have built a desktop (personal opposed to other basic research terminals at work) with a 4690k oc @ 4.3Ghz, sapphire vapor x 290 oc 1.56Ghz....et al.
I have a sony vaio VPCEH24FX that came factory with an intel i3 2330m @ 2.2Ghz and i just upgraded it with an intel i5 2450m at 2.5Ghz that has intel's turbo boost to 3.1Ghz. Its been in my possession since new in 2011 and i came across a free i5 today and decided to install it.
One problem. Its doesnt boost to 3.1Ghz
Everything seems to work fine. In fact it runs better. I ran prime 95 and watched "cpu temp" and cpu ID and temps were at 65c but cpu id only shows a 2.5ghz speed. So does task manager. and intel processor diagnostic tool, and anything else.
So, Im thinking the bios isnt made for turbo cpus. apparently. even though i have virtualization turned on. (if it makes a difference). I see no option in bios for turbo utilization. I have noticed that alot of sony's laptops are very simular and im looking to reload the bios of my factory i3 2330m with the bios of a factory i5 2450m BUT i cannot seem to find out if the mobos are exactly the same. ergo, if i load an i5 turbo bios to an i3 mobo thats different it may crap out.
Does anyone have experience with this type of upgrade with this laptop and might give some leeway as to what may be done to enable the turbo feature?
