Question Upgraded to Win 10 and now getting ataport.sys BSOD randomly (dump file info included)

So I upgraded to win 10, installed all the drivers etc. Now every once in a while, totally randomly, a BSOD saying "system_service_exception" and that ataport.sys failed. I did run CCleaner and checked that I have latest drivers, but the problem continues. I have the dump files so if anybody can interpretate from those what is wrong.? It might be the new win 10 -related, or it might be hardware-related, because my kid got to the power button of my PC and repeatedly pushed it on and off, and probably after that the old win 7 stopped booting - I purchased a new SSD, installed win 7 from cd, and upgraded to win 10 right away.

Instead of the text of the dump, could you paste a link to the raw dump file itself?
What is your full system spec includin PSU make and model?

I tend to avoid using Bluescreen viewer and Whocrashed as they are more translators as opposed to debuggers, really a full debug is the best way to go and if you post the raw dump file, we can help give much more clarity.

Problem with upgrading from 7 to 10 is you bring all the old win 7 drivers along for the ride. Unless its an old PC, i would do a clean install of Win 10 now you have a license that works with 10. It might be faster than trying to fix it other ways.

bsod blames 2 parts of windows, which will make it fun to identify which driver is actually at fault
ataport = Microsoft Windows ATAPI Driver file.
ntoskrnl = windows kernel. Usual suspect of almost all errors found by Bluescreenview or Whocrashed. Windows isn't suicidal, kernel doesn't just decide, i feel like crashing today. Its almost always a driver behind the scenes saying go on, jumping off the cliff won't hurt.

you don't need the install key for 7 to install 10. Once you have activated win 10, the license details are saved on Microsoft servers. License key now works for 7 and 10. though obviously not at same time.

when you reach the screen asking for licence, click "I don't have a key" and win 10 will continue to install and reactivate once finished

Ok. Where should I find the dump files and then I have to upload them online for you to see them? Can you suggest some free site where to upload after I find them?

My PC is a custom built desktop pc with:

• AMD FX-6300 six-core cpu at 3,50Hz (no overclocking)
• 8gb Kingston ddr3 ram
• Geforce GTX 760 gpu
• Asus m5a97 evo r2.0 mobo
• XFX pro550w psu
• Wd Green SSD 240gb (brand new) and old kingston 240gb SSD
• lots of fans

Fresh install of win 10 sounds logical, although I just finished setting all the settings and software etc, it would be a bummer to do it from scratch. So If I manage to get de dump file for you, would you be able to identify if the problem is hardware or OS-related? I wouldn't want to install win 10 all over again if it's after all hardware that is failing. After my son had repeatedly pushed the power button, I couldn't get the old win 7 to boot from the old SSD, so with my logic there's a possibility that something physical might be broken, right?

in view tab, click on the tick box next to hidden items
you are looking for memory.dmp file
copy it to another location

Do you have a CD/DVD or Blueray drive? I would have thought those drivers built into windows? is it internal or external? if external, i wonder if problem is the Asmedia USB slots. Don't do clean install yet, need to look at dumps


Alternate to clean install
You could try a reset and ask it to save files/settings. Files = library folders. Library folders = Documents, pictures, movies, music (the default folders that come with windows). Settings = logins and desktop

That will force windows to get all new drivers and clean any win 7 ones you might have.

Go to settings/update & security/recovery
under reset this PC, click get started
I think there are a few options
1 is Keep files and settings
2 is Wipe everything, essentially a clean install of windows.
3 could be factory reset though unlikely.

Choose the Keep files/settings
resets only touch C drive, anything on other drives will be ignored. Windows won't know it exists though so you may need to take ownership of other folders on other drives (not sure, never done a reset - I normally just clean install)

You would need to reinstall programs again.

Oh ok sorry, I was too fast. I didn't start any re-installs yet.

I can't find any files in the root folder of the drive, only folders. And yes, I succesfully ticked the hidden files box and I see some hidden folders. I tried the search function with "memory.dmp" also but no results. But surely they must be somewhere because the bluescreenviewer can see them, right? Any other location they might be in?

I have an internal CD/DVD-R drive which works just fine. I can't recall downloading any drivers to that drive like ever maybe. And my SSD's are in IDE-mode in bios, if that's related.

Sorry i'm a total noob with these dump files.

There is a driver on motherboard website for sata, that might be the one causing errors. Wait and see if dumps reveal anything useful. Generally Windows can do it all without drivers for internal drives so you don't normally download anything for them.

For the IDE option for the drives; AHCI doesn't work. When I choose AHCI mode the OS won't boot, it just says that an operating system is missing, press ctrl+alt+del to restart.

Btw, I just noticed that if I switch my C drive to another SATA-port in the mobo, it won't boot. Is that normal?

Yes there is a way on WIN 10 also ! Go into BIOS set the SATA mode to IDE and boot into system.

Start REGEDIT and look for this line :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci\StartOverride

Change the 0 DWORD value from 3 to 0.

Reboot, and change your SATA controller to AHCI in BIOS. Now let it boot into safe mode, WIN 10 will install required drivers for AHCI.

Now with a normal boot you will boot into Windows with AHCI drivers.

Note : OEMs suggest reinstalling rather than changing, especially with an SSD.

You stand the chance of loosing your install if something goes wrong, and different systems may behave differently.

Not Recommended for Windows 7.

Is the difference in speed big? My SSD's seem quite fast (after years with HDD disks) and I wouldn't want to risk anything for a difference I could not notice. Maybe if I have to reinstall because of the BSOD error, I could reinstall straight to AHCI, but otherwise stay with the IDE. Or is it recommended to change to AHCI?

you have 6gbit ports, so IDE might be running max of 133 MB per second whereas AHCI can run 600 MB per second... only a little difference

Gardenmans software is much better at analysing multiple dumps, but it doesn't take me too long to run multiples now, but being as we rarely need ALL dumps analysing, I have done the first 4. Reports are here for your consideration and I'll probably make notes afterwards:

• I today there is another NVIDIA driver available.
• There is a much newer BIOS available.

running. that is the AHCI driver. a newer version than what is on the Asus website.
Seems odd to have that running IF pc is actually running drive as IDE

right click start
choose device manager
click arrow next to IDE/ATAPI Controllers
Check for an entry that contains the acronym "AHCI." If an entry exists, and there is no yellow exclamation mark or red "X" over it, then AHCI mode is properly enabled. If you don't see an "AHCI" entry, or the only entry contains a red or yellow mark, then there's a problem and AHCI mode is not properly enabled.

partmgr.sys = windows Partition manager. All 4 errors are in that module.

just make sure its not the drive. All errors pointing at it being something to do with storage.

true, could be the AMD sata drivers but I seen older ones work fine, they must be signed by MS to work with win 10.

Sticks up for bitdefender not being as common as avast is in regard to causing BSOD.

In Device manager under IDE/ATAPI Controllers there are:

• AMD PCI IDE Controller
• AMD SATA Controller (IDE MODE)
• ATA Channel 0
• ATA Channel 0

So no AHCI there, and no exclamation marks or X's.

I have downloaded all kinds of drivers using Iobit Driver booster, maybe that installed the AHCI driver?

I downloaded and ran the Datalifeguard but it said that my WD SSD is not supported and I should instead use WD SSD Dashboard to test it. So I did, and it shows that the drive is healthy and fine.
But I'm wondering if something in the sata ports or mobo has broken due to the power button incident. Because now I can boot the drive only from one port - if it's in another port it won't boot. And after the incident the old SSD with win7 wouldn't boot (now it's a secondary drive where I back up files and it works fine, but there's a 100mb unallocated space that I figured is broken so I made it unallocated). I don't know it that's something.

So next steps I'm thinking:

• Change Avast to Bitdefender
• Update AMD sata contoller (where to download?), nvidia driver and bios (from asus website there's only one update that says to improve some usb compatibilities, is it that one?)
• Change IDE to AHCI as instructed before

random 100mb+ unallocated spaces are normal on drives, or at least, i have one an a drive here. Not sure why, i made 2 partitions, and made let the second have all the remaining space and yet it still ignored 129mb

If you not crashing now, don't do anything else below unless you do crash. BSOD can go away as fast as they arrive.

Windows defender is enough alone?
"remove avast and just use windows defender until we know its not problem, removes 95% of your drivers too. " - Do you mean that removing avast will remove 95% of drivers or that I should remove them?

You have 23 3rd party drivers on system, removing Avast will remove 14 of those drivers. So maybe 95% was excessive and a guess, but it will reduce the number of things we can blame, and if you still BSOD after that, you can put it back on once we figured out cause.

Driver verifer
1) search for “Create a restore point” and create a restore point

2) Create a bootable USB of Win 10 installer to use as a boot drive. download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

Steps 1 & 2 are just precautions. Once you have an installer and a restore point, you are ready to run it

Once it causes a Blue Screen of Death, upload the minidump file to your post, and we see what it shows us.

Windows defender is enough alone?

Also just to add to this point, Windows Defender is one of the best AV you can get ultimately. It's up there competing with the top paid AV. If people didn't want to spend money on an AV, I wouldn't hesitate to just run Defender.

I wouldn't run defender alone, I always have Ublock Origin running on all my browsers. and a copy of malwarebytes around for a 2nd opinion.

Defender is often in top 5 AV in tests but well, I prefer Bitdefender which is always in top 2. defender is getting better as the years go by meaning paid alternatives need to keep adding new features to stay needed. I figure since i go to all sorts of weird places finding answers here, being over protected is useful. IT can be too protective as the bitdefender web add on was blocking all of the menus on Asus site but i whitelsted it now.

But defender is good enough for the short time we need to remove Avast just to see if it fixes the BSOD or not.

I'll be honest, many other testing mechanisms I see don't necessatily tally up. It's a good review, but Defender has exceeded industry expectations.

From June 2019 - 4.18 exceeded 0-day malware attacks protection industry average (higher than avast!, Avg, Avira, Malwarebytes premium, and met Bitdefender and Kaspersky.)
Same applies to malware discovered in the last 4 weeks. On top of that false positives were drastically down in over 1,000,000 samples.

I use Bitdefender myself as you say, It's been top 2 for as long as I can remember. but I don't hesitate suggesting Defender nowadays, maybe not in the past, but now I do !

defender is better than nothing, and the more it does to narrow gap between it and top tier, the less people will buy products that actually aren't any better than it.

But anyway, lets wander back on topic (I am to blame)
