Upgrading a refurbished desktop

am about to purchase a HP 6005 desktop for a gaming experience. I am hopping to upgrade the desktop, since I purchased it for under $50, trouble is I do not know what kind of graphic card would support my desktop. Any advice? Thank You

Depends, if it is an HP/Compaq 6005 Pro they made those in a SFF (Small Form Factor) and MT (MiniTower) versions, and each have a different video card requirement. According to HP specs, they both have a PCI Express x16 slot, but the SFF version must use a Low Profile card. Can you elaborate on the specific model you have

it appears to have a pcie slot, so any modern video card should be supported. however, even with the fastest supported CPU installed anything more than a R9 270/GTX760 will likely be wasted due to the IPC of that class CPU.

i'd go ghetto and get a decent 550w ATX PSU (xfx is a good brand) and let it hang outside of the case if it didnt fit inside. Then get a 750ti/760 after having upgraded the BIOS if applicable and CPU to the fastest reasonably price quad core. have atleast 4gb of ram and a 64bit OS, 8gb is preferred.
personally i would not trust the OEM PSU to run any kind of upgraded system

^---I tend to agree with that.

The only difference is that with a 750ti, you can trust even a bad PSU most of the time. The HP powersupplies aren't nearly as bad as some other major brands. An HP 300w and a 750ti is common and the 750ti is a pretty small card.

My advice, see if your CPU can accept the 750ti, by this I mean make sure the CPU won't bottleneck (slowdown) your GPU. It's a $110 card and that's the best way that you could turn that $50 into something for gaming use.

Edit: if you have to replace, the PSU, GPU, CPU this will cost you $250, which I wouldn't find worth it considering you'd be buying an older generation CPU.

Thank you for your answers but I decided to build my own gaming desktop. But I have questions for that as well. I am getting the nessesary parts for what I want and noticed I needed a Network Interface Card, and a Sound Card, but my motherboard I picked out already has the ethernet ports and audio ports. Do I still need the cards? Thank you

Try to have the same phase count or more on your motherboard as your CPU has cores; a very general rule.

I do have more questions. I already have the parts in my amazon cart that I think will make my computer, but I don't know if I need any more. Please tell me if these parts will in fact work and if I need any additional parts. (I already have a monitor, mouse and keyboard) I, so far, have: 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive (3.5 inch) AMD 3.4 ghz Processor, ASUS AM3+ AMD motherboard, 600 volt ATX 2.2 power supply and Rosewill Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower computer Case. OK, so I went to the website and picked out the right parts that will work for my desktop, if its correct, all I need is the: case, ram, motherboard, CPU, hard drive, and a CPU cooler? IF so, do I need any extra cords/wires too complete my desktop?

You realize you are using integrated graphics with both of those builds? Only pointing that out because the original OP was asking about adding a GPU. You have plenty of headroom with that PSU to add a dedicated GPU at a later date though.

Well, without knowing a budget, I simply followed the OP's build and improved it. (the one posted before mine :) )

As you can see prior, we discussed the possibility of adding the 750ti, but OP changed his mind and wanted to build new.

Thank you for your replays!! ..... So jaraldo, would you suggest I get the new intel CPU that you suggested? Can I use that Intel CPU with my original build? Or do I need the other parts that you suggested as well?

Well I actually changed almost everything from your build, I'll list why now that I have some spare time 😛

-One difference between AMD and intel CPUs is their cores. The intel have stronger cores but usually not so many, while the AMD usually have more cores that are weaker.

You were going to buy a 2 year old AMD cpu with only 2 cores. The intel cpu I listed came out this year and has 2 cores. I don't think the a4-3300 even is close in anything to the G3220.

-The 4gb of memory is faster than the memory you had. 1600mhz is the minimum these days. Usually when you only have integrated graphics, you want to have 2x2gb memory and something higher than 1866mhz. But, I thought you could just add in another 4gb stick later and even add in a nice $100 graphics card when you can. A graphics card is always better than the graphics of the CPU.

-It is actually more of a "trap" when you buy a tower/powersupply bundled together. It means 100% that the power supply will be bad quality. The power supply I have selected is fine for what you are doing. The tower was just a good tower, it can be changed if you want.

-I put in a 1TB hard drive for $52 and you put in a 500gb Hard drive for $49 😛

As much as I like things lasting as long as possible, with XP dead, there is really no point to it. You could for the time being keep it, but understand there is no security updates or anything for it. Windows 8 would be better.

Do you have the money to buy an operating system right now? and what type of games do you play?

Thank you jarald thats very helpful, I chose the [arts you selected and for a little over 270 you can't beat that! Thanks again, and about the operating system, I would prefer not to use windows 8, so I may just stick with Windows 7. But would Windows 8 be a better gaming experience? And I plan to play The elder scrolls online, WoW, The Old Republic, TitanFall, games like that.
