Upgrading AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU to AMD Athlon XP 2400+ CPU

I Have an older Compaq Presario 6410NX with a FIC AM-37 mobo. It has Phoenix Award BIOS core v6.00PG, BIOS rev. 3.08, date 12/16/2002. It currently has an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Palomino CPU, 266 FSB. I would like to replace it with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ Thoroughbred CPU, 266 FSB for possibly added speed. Can anyone foresee any advantages or problems in doing so and will I have to update the BIOS? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

earlier i also i used to have xp 2000+.. but shifting to intel.. u'll see a significant change...

now.. if given a chance again..o'll definitely go for intel

Yet another Intel Fanboy! You do know that AMD don't only do Athlon XP processors don't you?

This is clearly not an Intel/AMD problem, the thing is it is really not worth upgrading from an XP 2000+ to a 2400+ (unless you acquire one free), I'd save your money and put it towards a whole new PC, any new computer will be faster than what you have (even the cheapest ones).

And depending on your budget, it could be better to get AMD or it could be better to get Intel.

i really don't think theres a point in that upgrade. that cpu will still be ridiculously slow by today's standards. what you could do is upgrade more than just the cpu. get a new motherboard/cpu/memory. you could definitely do all that for under $200.

I'm currently running 2400+ in my 4 year old home desktop (Nvidia chipset). My office computer is a 4700+ dual core AMD and I honestly don't see the difference in speed- allowing for networking at work. There won't be much of a jump going from the 2000+ to the 2400+ but there is some O/C headroom. Ran mine at 200/400Mhz F/R bus and backed off the multiplier to 11 for 2200Mhz . Bios showed as a 2700+ and with better cooling runs well. Again only if cheap, on Win XP, and limited expectations. Propertary bios may cause you problems so be patient and figure out where the cmos reset jumper is ahead of time

I have to agree with some of the others. You won't see very much, if any, improvement in performance.

I used to have an Athlon XP 2400+. Overclocked it by 400mhz without much improvement in speed. Then, I bought a nice Core 2 Duo... beats it hands down.
