Upgrading CPU from a Fx-6300 to a FX-8350

I was thinking about upgrading my CPU to an FX-8350. I feel like my FX-6300 in bottlenecking my GPUs even though its overclocked to 4.5Ghz. I just have a few questions before I do the upgrade. Will i need to re install my OS or anything like that? Will the Corsair CX750M be able to handle dual GPUs and an OC CPU that is drawing more power than my current one? Also how much of a performance boost will i get in games like Dayz SA and BF4? Sorry for all the questions, i just dont want to make a mistake by buying a new CPU.

Don't do that, the FX-8350 will only give you 2 extra cores that won't help at all for games since at most they only use 4 cores, AMD simply has no CPUs atm able to handle gpus the way intel CPUs achieve (specially when Intel CPUs are OCed too).

You won't need to re-install your old OS. You really only have to re-install an OS if you're replacing a hard drive, SSD, or motherboard. I would advise getting a 850w PSU to be on the safe side. Having two R9 270X cards in SLI pulls a good amount of wattage but still might be okay with a 750w PSU. However, if you're also overclocking your CPU by a large margin then you'll probably want to buy a PSU with more wattage. I'm not sure of what performance increase you'll get with those games but it should be a pretty decent increase. There's a good chance your FX-6300 is bottlenecking your system, upgrading to a 8350 could offer a substantial performance increase with all your games, especially CPU intensive games.

I'm not even really thinking about the cores, the FX-8350 makes good use of the cores it has compared to that of the FX-6300. Also the FX-8350 is a great CPU for overclocking. Here's a comparison between the two CPU's; compliments of CPUBoss:

Yes the Piledriver has some improvements but as for gaming that's really nominal, check this review from anandtech, pure gaming results:

You'll see the improvement is practically nothing, not worthy at all to expend on it for gaming purposes.

Your best bet is to go with Intel like firo40 mentioned if you want to get a nice fps boost in games overall.

I just bought my motherboard a month ago due to my old one not having two PCI-E x16 slots. I cant get myself to buy another motherboard after only having this one for a month.

Would a better route be to just get a Corsair H100i and just overclock it to 4.8-5Ghz? I'm guessing that will take my PSU to the limit of what it can handle though.

It's too bad you aren't willing to go for the 8350. If you sold your old 6300 you'd only have to put $70-$80 towards the 8350. Also, the 8350 has become the new AMD CPU 'recommended' system requirement for newer games. Watch Dogs and Shadow of Mordor are two good examples of that. You've got a nice computer build but it's too bad you won't be able to harness the true power of your dual R9-270X.

I'm definitely willing to go for the 8350 but i'm just not sure if its going to end up as a flop and nothing will improve much or if I will be able to use the full or almost full power of the GPUs

It won't be a flop that's for certain but it won't make as much of a difference if you were to buy an i5. Also, I don't think the FX-6300 will make the cut newer games coming out such as; Dragon Age: Inquisition, Assassin's Creed Unity, The Witcher 3, and Batman Arkham Knight. Those games will most likely be fairly CPU dependent since they are open-world games. The 8350 may even struggle with those games but it's very overclockable. I have the 8320 and I was able to OC it from 3.5 GHz to 4.4 GHz so just think about what you could do with a CPU that has 8 cores and runs at a standard clock speed of 4 GHz. I imagine you could easily get it to 4.7 GHz. There's not much chance of any CPU bottlenecking happening then but with a FX-6300 you might see that problem pop up more often as games get more demanding.

Depends on the games. He'll most likely be fine on most games to date except for Watch Dogs which is indeed 'recommended' to have an FX-8350. That trend is most likely going to continue with newer games as well. Shadow of Mordor will be the next culprit in this trend which also 'recommends' a FX-8350. I'd post a link to the requirements but I'm using my phone so I can't.

It is most definitely not a waste for the system build he has. He could experience severe CPU bottlenecking in Watch Dogs and many newer games coming out with the CPU he has now. With an FX-8350 there will be little to no bottlenecking in Watch Dogs. I have an FX-8320 and it handles Watch Dogs well on Ultra but I still experience minor bottlenecking with it.

I guess I will just get an i5 and a new motherboard. Its better in the long run anyways. What motherboard and cpu do you suggest? I would rather not go over $350, I was thinking the i5 4690k and the MSI Z97-Gaming 3 motherboard or ASRock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer.

The motherboard would have to have 2 PCI-E x16 slots for the crossfire that im running to get the full use... It would also be awesome to get a a board that is good for CPU OC too.

The FX 8350 will give little boost in fps, but again, so will the 4690k. The bottleneck argument won't float because you're running 270x, even with CF, the 8350 won't bottleneck. Come again if you're buying 290x CF. One of my build is a $75 Athlon 760k with a 280, no appear bottleneck.

However, the 8350 will be better than the 4690k if you record/steam games, run any 3rd party programs while gaming, and video rendering. The 4690k beats my 760k in every run but still suffers from the single threaded 4 cores limitations. My 760k is doing just fine, and I will not pay over $200 for single core performance boost. 4690k will be overpriced til it drops to $150ish.
