Question Upgrading CPU

I have a i5 7400 currently and would like to upgrade, but I really don't want to replace my board so the best cpu would be the i7 7700k. Is is worth it to keep my board and go with the 7700k or get a new mb and get something better like a 8th or 9th gen?

It will depends on what's the main task of your PC and which other components (mainly GPU) do you have.
If it is gaming, what's the resolution you use to play?
What's your motherboard model?
