This is my current build https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/wolverine5454/saved/#view=z29ZLk
and want a boost in performance in games at 1080p and was wondering what really needs a change as I have seen many differing opinions on the subject and I'm looking for a definitive answer. Do all I need is a slightly better CPU or would a 1070 be a the way to go or even upgrading RAM to 2x8. Heard all sorts. Just looking for some clarifcation, thanks.

I'm looking to game at 1080p and 60hz

Perfect. I recommend a rig similar you yours to 10+ people a day looking to game at 1080p 60Hz. A 1070 will give you ~40% more frames which comes to about 30fps more than what you are getting right now. BUT you monitor can't handle any frames above 60fps and if you get lets say a GTX 1080, you will experience occasional screen tearing (fixed partially by VSync). So an upgrade is not recommended. Again a GTX 1060 is great for gaming at 60Hz/1080p and you should be hitting max (60 fps) on average on mid-high/high settings. GTX 1060 is more than capable of producing those frames in GTA 5 (maybe not at maxed out settings).

Also not looking to OC

7600k gives ~300Mhz more than a 7600 (non -...
Are you still under return period for that cpu...? If yes, return it and get the 7600k, You bought a board that is perfect for overclocking but a processor that can't overclock. If not your current processor can run perfectly @1080p60Hz and I wouldn't recommend an upgrade. You should not have any problems running most games at mid-high/high at 1080p resolution.

So it depends on your monitor. If it's a 1920x1080 running at 60Hz, your rig is great as it is and doesn't need any upgrades unless you are simply looking to blow some money or want to game at higher resolutions and refresh fates. The latter will need a 144Hz/1440p/4k capable screen

UPDATE: getting 2x16 Ram at 3000/3200 won't be a bad idea. There are a few (if any) games that have a minimum requirement of 8+ Gb Ram but an upgrade is possible there.

Apologies, should have made it clear that yes, I'm looking to game at 1080p and 60hz. I'm guessing a 1070 would be overkill for that resolution and Hz then? I'd just like to be able to comfortably run games at very high settings over 60 frames, I'm thinking the jump to the 7600k would help especially in CPU intensive games like GTA.
One more thing, would the same RAM I have already got but just 2x8 do the trick?
Thank you for your prompt responses
Update: Also not looking to OC

Wouldn't an I7 be a bit too much though for 1080p/60hx with a 1060? I'm fairly new so can't say myself but what would be the issue with a 6600k?

i guess having an i7 is always better than an i5 .. cause i used an i5 with an r9 390x and both were always overheating ..! in every game possible . to the point of burning smells out of the case !

now i use a non Ti 1080 with an old i7 and everything is much calmer and cooler . the fans don't even spin faster in the games than when idle in the desktop

7600k gives ~300Mhz more than a 7600 (non - oc version) even if you don't overclock it. Spending just ~20-40$ more on it will still make it worth it. Plus you can OC.

Yes. Just make sure they are the identical and have the same speed. (2133 in your case) Or else you will experience compatibility issues.

Yes a 7700k is an overkill for gaming at 1080p/60Hz unless you also use your PC for intensive video editing, etc.

Hope this helped.

Thank you for your answer, I guess a monitor upgrade could justify the 1070 but I'll do more research and testing about CPUs and the likes, Will definitely upgrade on the RAM though. 7600k is also a decent price so may head that way and slowly upgrade everything over time. Plus if need be a local store will buy the 1060 for £150 so that would help. Thanks again for the help.

Glad to help. Try saving up (like me) when VEGA hits the market. It's going to be big!! (hopefully) 😛
