My system:
Geforce GT 710
Intel Core i7-4790 CPU @ 3.6 GHz
12 GB of RAM

I am a professional video editor who just made the leap from mac. I do a lot of VFX heavy work as well as some 3D. I need to upgrade my card to a faster version as I also want to be able to run some graphics heavy games from time to time.

I know I will probably need to update the power supply as well, but making the leap from mac systems, I am a loss as to what I should get. Any help on both those fronts would be great. Budget is between $300-400 for the card.

What card should I get? And what power supply should I get?

Thanks!

Your best choice is either a GTX 970 or a R9 390. The R9 390 is the better performer (not by much), with double the VRAM. The GTX 970 has the better drivers though, with a GTX 970 you can do all sorts of stuff in GeForce Experience, optimize games, record gameplay (60fps 1080p, doesn't impact performance) and stream to nVidia shield devices. I'd pick the GTX 970 since you won't be having any trouble with it, ever. The AMD cards are prone to failing and just aren't as user friendly, also they are less supported by games because nVidia is a rich company which pays developers to optimize games for nVidia cards.

I would go with a 970 or 290x then. Don't let the 8GB of VRAM of 390 fool you. It is not fast enough to use all of that.
If you go with the 970 you can get this PSU: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0550v1
If you go 290x I would go with this:https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr
If you can get a deal on an XFX, or Seasonic at those wattages or better go with that. The reason I saw that is because unlike a lot of companies, XFX and Seasonic doen't have lower tiered ones, they only have top 2 so it's easier, when you see their names you know its a quality unit. (most if not all XFX are Seasonic)
