Upgrading from an i5 2400 to an i5 4690k.

Is it worth the performance increase? (Considering I'll also have to change my motherboard).

I don't think there's much of a performance increase. Perhaps switch out for a i5-2500K then OC?

I would either go for the 2500k as said above, or upgrade to a i5 6600k

Also it depends on what kind of "performance" you are looking for. Gaming? Video rendering? You will get more benefit from moving up to a 6600k from a 2400 for video editing than you will for example moving up from a 2400 to either a 4690K or 6600K for gaming. If you are upgrading now, I'd upgrade to the new 6600K. Of course remember with that you will also have to upgrade to DDR4 RAM also. You may be able to run your same DDR3 RAM with a 4690K chipset (1150) depending on what voltage it is.

Finally I'll say this: for gaming, especially at higher quality settings and resolutions, your GPU power is more important than your CPU power and speed. I have proved this over and over when running my games at a 4.7GHz overclock vs. the stock 3.9GHz turbo speed.

Yes, I use my pc for gaming only. I currently have a GTX 960 4GB GPU as well.

I like to keep my computer up to date to be able to handle the latest games to a playable standard but not at max settings.

The reason I was thinking of the update is that I've seen that my CPU has just started to fall off the radar for minimum requirements on a couple of the newest games such as Just Cause 3.

Do you guys think it would be better to wait a year or so for some of the hardware to come down in price instead?

Unless you need an upgrade like *now* due to a hardware failure (been there, got that T-shirt, heh), I would recommend waiting, specifically for the new Pascal GPUs from Nvidia if nothing else. The Sandy Bridge chipset (which I still have and use in 2500K form) is showing its age though. If I were in your shoes, I'd wait until next year, maybe 4 months or so when the new stuff comes out?
