Hi

With the new 3080 cards coming out i am wondering if it is time for me to retire my old 1080 and pony up for an upgrade to a 3080.

I'm quite new at upgrading so I'm wondering if my current setup would allow me to upgrade without having to change other too many other components as well?

My current setup
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • PC Mate B350 Motherboard
  • Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB,
  • 32GB RAM DDR4 3200
  • 1TB Sabrent NVMe M2 SSD,
  • 600W 80 Plus Rated PSU

I'm primary worried about the B350 which only supports a single PCIE 3.0 x16, will this prevent me from getting the best out of a 3080?
Similarly, would I need to upgrade by PSU as well?

Any thoughts/guidance and obvious bottlenecks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Wei

I would say the RTX 3070 would be a better fit for your system. It doesn't eat as much power. It's still ahead of even the most powerful gaming card out today. It would just work. If you upgraded to the RTX 3080 you would need a new PSU. I'd recommend a motherboard with PCI-E 4.0 the get the best performance with the RTX 3080. So B550 or X570.
PSU for 2080 i think is 750w minimum, so you'd probably want atleast an 850 to be 100% safe - I'm in the middle of making my build and decided to now wait for the 3080 (after almost pulling trigger on the 2080ti) and i'm upgrading my PSU from an 860 plat to a 1000W plat. better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it!

Based on the feedback, I'll definitely look at replacing my PSU with a 750/850W.

My current monitor is a pretty old one - it's a Hazro HZ27WC, which has a 2560 x 1440 resolution
https://www.trustedreviews.com/reviews/hazro-hz27wc

Currently with my 1080, I typically game at resolutions between 1920x1080 to 2560 x 1440, depending on the framerate I can get.

With upgrading to a 3080, I would hope to be able to fully game at 2560 x 1440 at max settings+ RT and 60fps, if nothing else bottlenecks my system. Not sure if it overkill compared to getting a 3070 but by going for a 3080 I would hope I wouldn't have to upgrade for at least the next 4-5 years!

Would this work? Any further thoughts folks or am I missing anything?

Good shout out on my monitor - I was hoping I could reuse it, it unfortunately only has a DVI-Dual input so will struggle to connect the 30xx GPUs which have HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.

From what I can tell from looking online, DisplayPort / HDMI > DVI adapters are quite iffy and I'll be better off getting a new monitor!

In summary this might be quite an expensive upgrade if I need to
  • Buy the 3080
  • Replace monitor
  • Replace the PSU

Am I missing anything?

waste of money
youll most likely never reach even 700 watts....

yes
stop wasting your money dude
the 1080 is still a very strong card
what games are you playing and what is your monitor? (that youre upgrading to)
if youre not playing triple a games on 1440p theres really no point upgrading your gpu and psu...
if oyu do play triple a titles on a monitor with a res of 1440p or higher and a refresh rate of 144 or higher then your upgrade plan is perfect. but really, if not, dont look for a reason to waste your money :)
