Upgrading GPU, old one seems to have failed on me.

Going to be upgrading my graphics card, since my 2-3 month old 750TI just bit the dust in my new system that I built a day ago.

Was getting black screen flashes and grey static. None of that right now, plugged into the motherboard DVI.

Just wanted to be certain that the new PSU I have in this rig can handle the 970 or an 280x/90x.

Seasonic 650w 80+ rated, modular (SLI-ready, but don't intend to SLI.)
PSU (newegg)

Looking to grab the MSI 970GTX 4G
MSI 970 4g (newegg)

Seen mixed opinions on what wattage is needed for the 280s/970s.

Depends how much you want to spend. At 300$+ 970 is a great choice although custom 290's are around 250$ with full 4GB vram and almost as fast.

280/280X are around 200$ but still capable gaming cards.

Yeah, I don't intend to be doing any 4k gaming anytime soon, so just wanted something reliable for 1080p, that won't torture the psu.

I would get a refund ASAP on the GPU if it failed within that short amount of time.

I would go for the GTX 970, it's more optimised for the latest games. Able to run GTA V, almost max settings @ 60FPS and runs at great temps.

For the PSU it will run the 970 but you can go for a lower wattage such as 500W (or 550W to be on the little safer side) to save you some money. 650W will make your system more "future proof" if you wanted to SLI your cards or upgrade later down the line.

Aye, already built my current rig just yesterday. My 750TI GTX I had for about 3 months, so I'm doubtful I could get it refunded. When I took it out and looked at it, I noticed one of the capacitors under the ACX cooling heatsink was bent.

But already have the 650w psu. Is there a generally preferred 970 that performs better than others?

Would the seasonic 650w be able to handle it, alongside i5-4690k and 8 gigs of 2133 8 cas G.Skill ram?

Best 970 cards are the MSI, Asus Strix and Gigabyte, they will more or less perform the same which ever you get.

I would get the MSI as it's the sweet spot, looks better than the gigabyte, has a slightly higher clock speed than the Asus Strix. I use it and it's great!

Works for me, looked at the sapphire again, noticed it says it requires a 750w psu. So that solidifies my answer: 970 is the way to roll.

Well when the bank opens tomorrow I'll throw the funds into my account and grab the MSi for 375 (that includes next day shipping).

Don't forget to overclock for better performance if you're confident with that kinda stuff.

My overclocking results are:

Power Limit - 110%
Core Clock - +145
Memory Clock - +450
gained about an additional 5-10 FPS, so it's worth doing but could potentially make your GPU die out a little quicker, up to you
