[SOLVED] Upgrading Hardware Build Help

Hello,

I have a Lenovo ThinkStation P310. I would like to now upgrade it. I would like to keep the Graphic card (Nvidia M4000, RAM (DDR4 16GB) and also possibly the CPU (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3408 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)). I would like to upgrade the Motherboard, Case and i will prob need a cpu cooler. Which way would you think is best to go around it and also what would you suggest me? I'd say my budget for this upgrade is £300-£400. I have a dual pc set up so i use the ThinkStation for streaming and my second pc for gaming. Thank you.

I would check pricing on the motherboards for that 6th gen against new 10/11 gen Intel. You might could build out an i5 within budget with the use of some of your current parts. The changes to the CPU landscape that came about as a result of the competition AMD brought with Ryzen has essentially made everything 7th gen and older Intel obsolete to some degree. Still useable, of course, but you might have to pay premium for "replacement" motherboards of that age and would consider it would likely be used.

The only reason i need to get rid of the motherboard because one of my PCI slot for graphic card died. I took it to repair shop and they confirmed this. I cant use my GPU on that motherbaord as there isnt enough room to put the GPU in the second slot. The repair shop had a graphic card which fit as it was small.

Is there parts you would recommend? I am not that knowledagble around things like this. Sorry for the hassle

6th gen is the "100" chipset. H110/H170 or B150. The Z chipset is for overclocking with K series CPU.

10th gen is 400 chipset, 11th get is 500 chipset.

I typically find that the H boards offer what I want out of non-OC type builds.

i5 10400/i5 11400 would be great choices. The DDR4 you already have should work fine as Intel doesn't take as much a penalty for slower RAM speeds and you didn't specifically mention gaming where it would mean frames.

Probably would be good to check the local market on used and new parts to see which works better for you. Moving to a new motherboard alone on an OEM license could mean needing to purchase a new one. Might also consider a new quality power supply as well.

Hey! Thank you soo much. By checking and comparing them it seems that going for a 6th gen H170 with i5 11400 would be the best. The RAM i have is a corsair 16gb 3200 which should be fine. Which case would you suggest me going for? I dont mind increasing my budget £500 but my wife will kill me because i spend £2.5k on a gaming pc recently. Only reason why i have a streaming pc is because i dont wanna lose frames lol Once again thank you very much :)

You want to make sure you have a B560 board with decent VRM's with that cpu or your system will throttle down. Also make sure you have adequate cooling/airflow (case + cpu cooler).

You cannot use the H170 with an 11400. H170 is for the 6th gen, the CPU you currently have. You would need to change the motherboard in order to move to 10th or 11th gen to the 400 or 500 respectively.

Hello!

I am deeply sorry for the late response. I've just been having some difficult days but things seem to be up and better :) So regarding this build what are a list of hardware which you recommend me use for my M4000 Graphic card? This PC will only be used for streaming and watching youtube and nothing else but i want it to be long lasting and also be able to stream in high quality. My budget for this is still £500. If it does got over by a bit then that is fine. I do have a RAM DDR4 which is 16GB that i will use but just need rest of the hardware. I live in UK

With the RAM and Quadro from your previous build you can do this. You can also add storage to it for saving all your recording materials if you like. I would suggest taking the storage you have from the previous streaming PC as well. You can swap to the 12400f or the 12100 if you think a 4core 8thread CPU will cut it. You could also do something with a 11000, or 10000 series intel CPU platform to cut some costs.

Well the list I posted would work "best" performance wise, however, the other options would be negligibly slower and cost maybe 50-100 less with the right parts. The build I linked will work best for much longer though. It depends on how you want to spend your money.

Hey Bro! Hope you’re well man. So I bought all the parts and build the pc. However, I am having CPU issue. Whenever I turn the pc on the cpu red light shows and the pc keeps restarting.

I didn’t buy the power supply you recommend. I bought a Evga 600 W1, 80+ White 600W, Power Supply 100-W1-0600-K3, Black

That could be a RAM issue. Try with 1 stick at a time.
okay sweet I’ll try this first thing in the morning. Hopefully this works :) how could I fix the ram issue then?

Sometimes kits of RAM are DOA (dead on arrival) and can cause issues like this. It could also be a bad CPU, but thats much rarer.

this isn’t a new RAM which I bought. This ram is perfectly working on my old pc but not the new one. Is there a way for me to send a video?

i did only try with one ram and it sort of didn’t give any issue and was powered on for 2min before restarting again

I recommend you make a new post but specifically about this issue so more people will see it in the systems section of the forums.

I just went on PC partpicker and pc benchmark and it shows that the CPU and motherboard are not compatible with each other?

What motherboard? What CPU? Specifically.

12000 series CPUs are generally compatible with 600 series motherboards.

Motherboard - MSI PRO B660M-A WIFI DDR4 Intel
Case - Silverstone Fara H1M Gaming
CPU - Intel Core i5 12400 Alder Lake-S
Graphic card - Nvidia Quadroo M4000
RAM - VENGEANCE® LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB)
Power supply - Corsair RM650, RM Series, 80 Plus Gold Certified, 650 W Fully Modular ATX Power Supply - Black

What issue?

The incompatibility mentioned by PC Part Picker? I didn't read it and have not seen it.

There may be some fine print you didn't read or it may simply be wrong. PC Part Picker is not perfect.

Hey so it seems my M4000 graphic card was causing the issue. I need to replace my graphic card. What graphic card would you recommend me? The Pc will be used for Streaming, Recording and Discord.
