Hey everyone, i'm fairly new to PC building and only really know the basics, but im interested in upgrading my current i5-7400 to an i7. I've done some research on my motherboard and whats compatible with it (The motherboard is a HP 82F1 or Odense2-K) and so far it says the motherboard is compatible with an Intel Core i7-7700 (Kabylake). I was just curious if anyone could confirm this for me or had any other recommendations, thank you all!

Also this is probably important to add, the PC is a pre-build unfortunately lol but I didn't know anything when buying it. I've heard many people say it's not worth upgrading a pre-built but i'm really interested in buying a new pc and i'm also very happy with the performance of it so far, I've had it about 3 years now and it still runs very good.

The I7-7700 will be compatible. From the HP support page:

The motherboard supports CPUs with a TDP up to 91W, so the 65W TDP 7700 should work just fine.
The 7700 will surely improve performance as it has 8 threads. You don't really have an alternative as this I7 is the best you can do on your motherboard, unless you completely change the platform and build a whole new system.

Even though a 6c/12t would be more suitable for nowadays tasks, the 4c/8t I7 is still a capable CPU.
