im curious is it worth upgrading my dell inspiron 560s from windows home premuim 64-bit to windows 8.1?

From Windows 7 > 8? No, in my opinion it's better going to 10 since it combined a lot of good features between 7 & 8 and they made the default Windows start bar dominant again over the garbage metro tiles screen in 8. Plus, if it effects your uses for the machine, Windows 10 supports DirectX12 unlike either of the prior. Despite the UI changes, 10 remains great to use for laptops/notebooks like 8 was designed to do. So i'd recommend either sticking with 7 or upgrading to 10, 8 isn't worth it. Hope this helps!

Do you know the specs of the model? The minimum requirements for Windows 10 is 2GB RAM (for 64 Bit) and a CPU of at least 1 GHz which i imagine you meet. That said, i'd say ideally 4GB RAM + Dual Core @ 2 GHz minimum for a stable experience.

Yes it is an x64 based system with 2gb of ram and a 2.2 GHz processor

It meets the requirements to run Windows 10 but don't expect to be blazing fast due to the old age of that hardware. Overall i've had, heard and seen mixed experiences with Windows 10 and older/weaker hardware. Some will say it's not great, particularity with such low amounts of RAM. But i'd say it's more optimised than 8 so if you're keen to upgrade from 7, i still stand with my recommendation of 10 over 8.

Okay so I have a Dell Inspiron 560s my friend gave to me. I cleaned it factory reset it and it runs good. It currently runs on windows 7 home premium. 2gb ram, 2.2ghz Intel Celeron 450 cpu and 500gb of hdd. I was wondering if it's worth upgrading to windows 10 or throwing the computer away and buying a new one?

Well, many ppl have said that win10 is lighter to run than 7 so you should try it out. You can always go back to 7 if you dont like it though.

Celeron 450 is single core cpu (and no HT). Windows 10 on single core performs rather weak.
You'll be disappointed with such OS upgrade.

WIn10 Disbeliever (me).

I have them all, old Inspiron 570 with Win7, my gaming PC (4790K with mild overclock) with Win8.1 and a few old laptops, which got free Win10 upgrades in the past.
All my Windows looks like Win7, because I use ClassicShell. Win10 has nothing to offer new to me (and possibly to a lot of people) except DX12. And I really hate Win10 for forced updates, especially for laptops.
Remember Anniversary update, which caused so many problems with laptops? Therefore, I completely disabled forced updates on my laptops, I revert this process once in a while or forcing certain update when absolutely necessary.
Win8.1 is promised to be supported till 2024, that is enough for me.
Regarding slow systems, My older laptop (previously Win7) is barely moving around with Win10, but it was OK with Win7, so I will vote for Win8.1 here, with both hands.

Anything else I missed?
