My current gtx 660 is in need to an upgrade and I was wondering what is the best card I should go for. I am looking for a card that will run games at 1080p 144hz on my
Acer GN246HL.
My current setup has an i5 6600k and 16 gb of ddr4 ram. So far looking around the 1060 is the best bang for my buck. But I am plabing on buying a VR setup in the next year or so and was wondering if I should put out the extra money to buy a 1070 that is stronrger and has support for sli. My power supply is strong enough if I choose to go sli down the road, I can.
I also read that I should just go with the 1060 for now as I do not plan on going 1440p and upgrade later as the technology for gpu''s and vr are advancing quickly and getting cheaper so in a year these cards can theoretically be outclassed

Solution
Include the expensive GPU upgrade in that "powerful VR kit" imo. A GTX 1060 will be fine for 1080p 144Hz gaming.

As far as SLI goes, I am a firm believer in a strong, new card vs. a pair of weaker old cards. Which further backs my idea, get the new VGA with the VR setup. You'll be happy with the 1060 now and happier with a powerful volta card later with that new VR kit.

I have head having a single strong card does have less problem than sli. I never really had the money or need for sli so if 1060 is more than enough i will definitely grab one up during the holidays.

Yeah I would. Just not for later VR developments like you said.

SLI has problems ; using 2x cards doesn't guarantee 2x power.
Both cards won't be perfectly in sync.
You might experience problems like stuttering and screen tearing, which is why I suggest ; just sell your old card for a decent amount of price and get a good new card. That's just my thoughts. The only reason to SLI imo, is going for the top tier system that demands max gpu power which you probably aren't.
