[SOLVED] Upgrading my PC (newbie)

Hi all,

First ever post, plus I’m a total noob when it comes to the PC world.

Long story short I acquired an old Alienware Aurora R3 from a relative and have taken my first steps away from console gaming, and into the vast planet of pc gaming.

Now it runs some games flawlessly (age of empires, dynasty warriors, dirt rally 2.0) but others it struggles, (the likes of Call of duty, Fortnite, Witcher) they run but only on either really low graphics or I get severe frame drops.

I’ve briefly read into and started to research how to improve the running, upgrading graphics cards, ram, etc just wondered if any of you guys could possibly help me out a little further as the pc jargon at present totally baffles me.?

I’ll list the full description of the current set up I have and hopefully be able to get some help on what I can/can’t upgrade or what I can/can’t do to make this pc run to the best of it’s ability.

If it’s at it’s maximum I’ll probably just move it on and buy a newer more modern system, just hoping I can get it to run a few of the newer games a little smoother!

Aurora R3 875w chassis.

Intel Core I7-2600 (3.40GHz, 8mb L3 Cache, 8C)

Memory : 6GB (2x2GB + 2x1GB) 133MHz Dual Channel Memory

Hard-drive : 500gb Serial ATA (7200rpm)
Graphics : Dual 1GB AMD Radeon HD6870 CrossfireX

Windows 7 (64bit) (won’t upgrade to W10, fails at boot stage???)

Thank you in advance for any help you guys can provide, looking at about a 4/500 pound budget!

Solution
that cpu, while very old, is still somewhat good, especially for gaming.

if you want a much better gaming experience, go for a 1660 super
or 1650 super

and an ssd. that will probably also fix the non booting to windows 10 problem.
get a sata 2.5" ssd. that pc does not have m.2 ports on it.
the curcial mx500 250gb or samsung 860 evo 250gb should be pretty good.

i would suggest upgrading the ram, but upgrading to 8 gigabytes is probably a waste, and since its ddr3 and you wont be able to reuse it in the future for your next pc, 16 gigs might be over the top.

so i would suggest trying to scrape by with the current 6, but upgrading if you see its not enough. most games run fine even on 4 gigs, but its a kind of a problem if you want...

so, get the new gpu and ssd, and check if your ram is enough for now.

you cannot upgrade the cpu though, atleast not to anything that would be a major improvement.
