I have been out of the building loop for some time now. Current build is as follows;

i5-3570k
ASUS sabertooth z77
EVGA GTX 1080 Hydrocopper
16gb Corsair Dominatir Platinum
Corsair AX750
Couple SSDs
and a custom loop.

I recently went to the GTX 1080 (2018ish) and went to 1440p gaming.

Does it make sense to keep the 1080? Or will it last awhile longer while upgrading my other components? Do I need to wait for post 9700k or 9900k cpus?

And keep my other hardware? It would require a new water block for the CPU.

What about a 3770k or is that just throwing money at a dead horse?

What if I said I was looking to spend about 1500 to upgrade.

First question you should ask, yourself, when thinking about upgrading is what does the computer not do that I want it to. With your CPU and video card there is really nothing you need to upgrade unless you just want to spend money to spend the money because the bank is complaining you have too much and their building is sinking due to the weight.

If the CPU is holding the system back in games (which is really should not be that much at all), I'd just replace the CPU/motherboard/RAM with something new and leave the rest as it is.

I think this is what I am going to do. 9700k or 9900k?

$1,000 budget on these three items. +/-

GTX 1080 is still a good card.

As far as CPU/board, definitely check out ryzen. Not that the 9700 and 9900 aren't good, but for example, the ryzen 5 3600x is only 200 dollars and is basically equal to an i7 8700k according to benchmarks I was seeing the other day. Plus when guys like Linus and others on YouTube are swapping to ryzen, that says something as well imo. I've got a 1700x which is a couple of years old now, but I'm happy with it. But I could stay on my current board and go to a 3000 series called CPU with a bios update if I wanted.

Just a couple of things to look at. But if you go the Intel route, I'm sure you'd be happy with that.

If you do want to go cheap, I know I've been seeing the i7 3770 non k on eBay for about 70 dollars USD. So if the k isn't much more and you could overclock, it might hold a bit if you wanted to wait.
