Upgrading NVIDIA GPU - advice?

Hello!

I bought a custom PC a couple of years ago but it's been struggling with running new games lately (e.g. Dragon Age: Inquisition, Assassin's Creed 4) so I was wondering if it was the GPU's fault, since my CPU and RAM, etc. seem to be pretty decent (from what I can tell).

Here's my setup:

Intel Core i7-3820
2GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti
16GB RAM (x2 8GB Samsung DDR3 @ 800 MHz)
64-bit Windows 7
ASUS SABERTOOTH X79

So I've been looking at NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (and 980 but it's a bit too expensive for me right now) - is that a good choice for a replacement?

Yes the GTX970 is a very awesome video card if you can afford it. I highly recommend it. I don't recommend any nvidia cheaper than it though at this moment. The 290 is the best card in it's price range, the 280x is best in it's price range, etc...

Your answer depends on the resolution and graphic details you play with. You should have no trouble playing at 720p and medium detail, and if it is so, there must be some other problem.
However if you game at 1080p and ultra detail, the 650ti is inadequate and you should upgrade your card to a 970.
To answer your "is that a good choice for a replacement? ", I will say it is the best choice for replacement at that price.

Yeah I play at 1080p and for most games I can play at High or Ultra at like 30-50fps but for next-gen I can't get past 25-30fps at *medium* settings. Thank you for your answers and the info! I'm definitely getting the 970 then
