Currently my build is as follows:
CPU: fx 8350
GPU: GTX 760
RAM: 8gb 1866 MHz corsair veganence
PSU: XFX 550w
Storage: 2tb HDD
MB: Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3
Cooling: hyper 212 evo

Okay so it's a decent mid-range build, but I'm ready to get some beefier graphics and a SSD. There's several options and I feel the best for my $1000 upgrade budget is dual GTX 970s. My question is, does this seem like the best option and what else should be changed. I know I'll definitely will need a new PSU and possibly a motherboard, I'd like to see the community's thoughts.

Wait until summer, then plan your upgrades.
Prices and components change over time, there is no real benefit to speculating 6 months ahead.

Though I will say an SSD and graphics upgrade would be nice. So would an intel processor.
I agree, 6mo is a long time to plan upgrades. New models may come out, no telling how it will affect prices of current upper end cards or if a better performance for the money card will surface. I don't know how well the dual gtx 970's would work. I think they'd give better performance than a single 980 especially at higher resolutions or multiple screens but there are always the gremlins involved with sli and certain games. It could be a major boost or may be a headache and a single stronger card might be a better choice.
