So bought an r9 290 about a few weeks ago for 240 dollars off craigslist. Runs great, even on my 80 PLUS gold 550w PSU. I game at 1080p.
However, I could potentially sell it on craigslist and then use that money + my paycheck (small) to get an GTX 970.
Pros: Less power usage on my under-requirement PSU.
Cons:
-less video ram than r9 290?
-Not a massive improvement, though still an improvement.
-I have to find a buyer for my r9 290 on craigslist.
I assume if my r9 290 was 'okay' on my 550w PSU, then the GTX 970 will be perfectly okay. How much should I sell for my R9 290 for? Is the improvement going to be noticeable?
Final note: I'm not rich by any means so don't get the idea that just because "I Might be able to afford it" means "I can afford it".
EDIT: in addition, i don't feel comfortable bringing strangers in my house so I'm concerned it'd be impossible to sell the card if I don't give people the opportunity to test it first on my computer.
As well, for the same amount of money I'd be able to get an SSD (instead of the gtx 970)
