Upgrading ram, help?

I currently have a Gigabyte ga-970a-ds3 motherboard with 2x4gb 1333mhz of ram, but I am looking to upgrade it to 16gb. I have it in dual channel mode, however the ram I'm looking to purchase is a single stick, if I were to plug it in, would it knock it out of dual channel mode for all 3 sticks, or have the 2 original in dual channel and the single stick in single channel?

I'm not too clued up on the channels so the help would be greatly appreciated

Why not just get the same kit you have now? That's almost guaranteed to work.

I had already thought of that, however it's not a common make and the manufactures website doesn't list items for sale

In that case i would try to find a 2x4GB kit with the same or nearly the same specifications. Voltage, clockspeed and latency are the ones you have to pay attention to.

I've found a 2x4gb by novatech with the same specs, hoping to go and get it this weekend
