Question Upgrading system advice

Hiya,

I’m looking to potentially upgrade my system soon, mainly looking at a CPU (Ryzen 7 5800x) and possibly GPU.

My current system specs are as follows:

Motherboard - B450 Tomahawk
CPU - Ryzen 5 2600
CPU Cooler - Stock cooler
RAM - 4x8GB DDR4 @ 3000 Mhz
GPU - EVGA Gtx 1070
PSU - EVGA Gold 650W
Storage - M.2 Samsung evo 970 & Corsair SSD
Case - Cooler Master TD500

Currently using a 1080p monitor but I will likely upgrade to a 1440p in future

My Questions are;

1) Would a Ryzen 7 5800x be a good upgrade and would I need to upgrade my motherboard/other components or would it be sufficient (Possibly considering overclocking capabilities) ?

2) What Graphics Card would be a good upgrade as I was looking at 2070 or 3070 but I’m open to suggestions.

3) I am also looking at a CPU liquid cooler (AIO), what are good options as I’ve mainly been looking at 360mm AIOs for future proofing. What would be a good option for this?

Any advice regarding my system is greatly appreciated!

IMO the 5700X is a better option for older chipset motherboards as it should stay cooler using less power. Also, overclocking (especially for AMD) IMO is a thing of the past.

Save yourself some money and get the 5600 (or 5600X if close in price), you don't need the 5800X

I second the 5700x. I have a 5800x and it’s a hot running cpu even with the 240mm aio I’ve got on it. The 5700x as I understand is lower wattage but close to the same performance and should be easier to cool. If I had it to do over I should have gone that direction.

For the Ryzen 5 5600x/5600 I did consider this because it seemed a good cost effective option, however i think I’m going lean towards ryzen 7 series as I’ll be using my system for gaming mainly, but also with the occasional design work for my job. So I think the 5700x would be a better fit for this.

Okay, thanks for linking those videos, they were quite informative. After hearing all your opinions I definitely think I will go with a 5700x as the 5800x seems unnecessary for me.

As the 5700x doesn’t come with a cooler would you guys be able to suggest an effective and reliable cooler? Preferably AIO as I think they look better but if there is good air cooling options, I may consider these. In addition I’d ideally want one that I’ll be able to reuse in future systems.

I’ve got one of the Arctic cooling units on a 5800x and like it pretty well. It also has a vrm fan that helps blow into the board.
