Upgrading To 7800GS from Ati Radeon 9000!

Hey people my first post here!

I search a bit the forums and come across lots of questions about 7800GS but couldn’t find my answer so if anybody could help me I would be glad.

I got Athlon XP 2500+ Barton overclocked to 3200+ 2.43 GHz and MSI-KT6 delta (VIA KT 600) and 2*512 MB of Ram (2.5-3-7-3) as you know I’m bound to AGP 8x system so I decided to buy a PNY Geforce 7800GS, I would like to pick a card from eVGA or others but I couldn’t find any!

You may say it would be wiser if I go for a PCI-E with 979 pin Athlon 64 system but the problem is that prices are not what we expected, for example I will buy 7800GS for 480$ and 7900GT for 550$! So as you can see if I upgrade my whole system I have to pay extra buck for all the other pieces so that I would pay extra 300$ for the 7900GT with PCI-E system, and it’s just impossible for me 🙁 .

So what you think!? plz Help! That would be great to play Oblivion, for a hardcore gamer like me the games are tempting and the money is restricted me to wait until I could upgrade my system ( you know how hard is it! 🙁 )

7800GS is somewhat of an overkill for your system. I also don't believe in spending that much money for an AGP card. I suggest getting something cheaper. Maybe a 6800GS or X800GTO.

Oblivion seems to run better on ATI cards, so if that's the main game you play, something like X800XL or X850XT could be better for you.

X800GTO AGP for $140 US

Not quite as good as a 7800GS, but it's half the price. Get this, and save your money for a Conroe system.

If you really want an nVidia card, here's a 6800XT for $130. It's only 8 pixel pipelines and 128MB VRAM, so the ATI card will beat it.

Will it be really an overkill?! I used my R9000 nearly for 5 years now and this card supported me gently all this time, but the bottleneck of this card is already reached at it's maximum.

Sure oblivion is not the only game but is the much demanding title and I’m not convinced not to buy a 7800GS 🙁!

I could only decide once, there would be no return, and I cannot regret it later, so I have to make a tough decision according to my pocket.

Hell yeah, my sis lives in Sweden and that's where I have to buy my card from, head over to http://www.eis.nu/ and look at the prices.

7900GT is 3389 SEK that is about ~550$ and so on.

That would be great if I could buy a card for these prices and there would be other alternatives BUT THERE ISN'T

I say no to the parts dude reason stay with the system you got now get the 7800 gs agp wait for a few months untill the next gpu's come out the ddr2 is now in and the 3 wont be long save a few bucks the 7800 will give you power till then good luck dude see ya in bf2 soon.

Doubt it. Your CPU should be fast enough to keep the card busy, at least on newer games that are graphics limited.

Going from a 9500 Pro to 7800GS with a P4-3.06GHz improved performance by a factor of 2x to 10x on different games and benchmarks, and you should get significantly more improvement than that going from a 9000. I run most older games (e.g. anything I tried up to Half-Life 2) at 2048x1536 with 4xAA if the game can handle resolutions that high.

MarkG as I stated in pervious post I would buy a 7600GT, there is some really interesting differences between these two cards here:

7600GT: 12 rendering pipelines, 560MHz core, and 128-bit memory interface
7800GS: 16 rendering pipelines, 375MHz core, and 256-bit memory interface

This is quite interesting to me and it’s really hard choice, both of them struggles on the benchmarks and have something nearly equal results I think.

As much as I can say the difference come at the algorithms that the games uses to render the frames so with one game using vertex pipelines more than normal processing will favor 7800GS over 7600GT but on the other hand if game engine uses lots of normal ALU process then 7600GT is the winner, I’m not quite sure but this is as much as I guess.

So if we put things this way there would be one conclusion that says this is up to the future of gaming that which way the developers choice to develop there games, as we can see cards like 7900GTX got 24 pipes!! So this could be the clue that the industry is leading pipes way, or maybe I’m wrong.

Well, I think most 7800GS cards run around 440MHz... 375 was just the default frequency that nvidia set. So that's about 20% more performance straight away.

overkill?the overclock barton at 2.43GHz is more than enough for this card.since most games nowadays are more to GPU limited rather than CPU limited.it will be more apparent if you run games at higher resolution(hardcore gamers never run 640x480 resolution).

Hmm... I'm searching the net the local stores to find the appropriate cards, but damn I couldn't decide what to do, I nearly blow my mind up.

yeah gt your right but I could only find AMD - ATHLON 64 Bit X2 Dual Core 3800+ for 344$, and that is so much I can’t afford.🙁

Hey, I just made my mind up and going to buy the followings tomorrow:

Leadtek PX7900GT TDH

And probably a PSU.

I already got:

MSI KT6 Delta
AMD 2500+ (Barton)
ATi Radeon 9000 8O

good choice dude to bad because the 7800 with the current board would be fine but you may as well upgrade for I have too
