Current rig Summary:
MSI GTX 1060 6GB GAMING X Graphics Card
i5 4690k OC to 4.3ghz
ROG Swift PG278Q Monitor
16gb crucial RAM 1600mhz

Is a 1080 likely to bottleneck with my CPU? Found other discussions on this but seems opinions vary. I am trying to boost my old system to get more reliable 2k resolutions to match my monitors native resolution (1080 resolutions just doesn't look good on my monitor - for games anyways).

Reckon i could sell my 1060 for about £250 and pick up a 1080 for £550. Could also upgrade the i5 4690k to a i7 4790k but again its a bit more cost and had some helpful advice on here advising its not really worth it.

So including the difference between selling the i5 and buying a second hand i7. I reckon total upgrades would cost about £400. Am i just wasting my energy and money?!

A word on bottlenecks. Even in the fastest system SOMETHING is always limited by something. In your case upgrading to a 1080 is fine, it will perform admirably. Where the bottleneck comes in is for example in game X with an 8700k and a 1080 you could average 120fps. With your CPU you will average 100fps. Its really no big deal, and does not affect playability.

An upgrade to a 1080 would not be a bad choice. However compared to a current generation system you will see a very slight drop. Not enough to worry about, this will mostly depend upon the resolution you play at, higher resolutions such as 1440p or 4k will see basically no difference.

In single player games, not really an issue. In multiplayer games that can / will use more than 4 cores (like BF 1), yes you will see some bottlenecking. It's not a deal breaker, just don't expect to get the same kind of framerates online as other GTX1080 owners that are running faster CPU's.

You could get an i7 4790k that would be compatible with your motherboard but unfortunately they are selling used at a premium on ebay right now.
