Hi I have a i7 4790 (non k) and will soon have a GTX1080 at christmas and was wondering what display would be better for performance for my system. I dont know if to go for a 4k 60hz monitor or go for a 1440o 144hz monitor ? and what sort of FPS would I be getting on 1440p

Solution
1440p was my choice when I had to choose between it and 4k. However you are not likely to hit 144fps all that often without significant compromises on settings.

The simplified reason is 8.3mp (frame of pixels at 4k) x 60 fps vs 3.7mp x 144fps or 498mp at 4k vs 531mp at 1440p
So in some situations the lower res, higher speed screen is pushing more data. In reality it is generally pushing slightly less because game companies (at least AAA ones) tend to use tricks like only re-rendering the changed data to reduce graphics card overhead (and make their game look better). But even so, it is a lot of data.

So what I would suggest is that 1440 @ 144hz is just fantastic. But...

So what I would suggest is that 1440 @ 144hz is just fantastic. But sometimes the graphics settings are more important to my enjoyment than the frames. To facilitate that, it would be useful to get a monitor with g-sync so that in those areas were your FPS drop down below 144fps you don't get a lot of tearing. Visually 1440p is close to as pleasing as 4k. And having the option to choose a lower frame rate and decent details is not an option on a 4k screen because there when you dip down to say 1/2 speed, you are at a paltry 30fps.

This site has a handy list of fast g-sync monitors.

Solution
You do not have enough GPU horsepower for 60Hz 4k (at a consistent 60FPS) in most games. For 1440p, you can get an idea of what do expect in a benchmark test of one here and scroll to the bottom for a drop down menu of other game benchmarks:

You will enjoy 1440p at higher FPS (with a G-sync monitor you will get between 90-110FPS depending on games). You will be nowhere near 144FPS is a straight up non G-sync 144Hz monitor.
