upgrading uniques

I read about upgrading. Can someone direct me to the site that will tell me
how and what I need to use to upgrade a unique. I know that Larzuk will
give me a socket for the quest, is that what the upgrade is or is a putting
specific items in my Horadric Cube with the unique and transmuting that?

It's referring to placing certain items in the horadric cube. The
recipe for upgrading exceptional unique armor to elite armor
is 1 Ko Rune + 1 Lem Rune + 1 Perfect Diamond + Exceptional Unique

A word of caution about upgrading, not all items are worth it. I have
been told that upgrading Vampire Gaze actually lowers it's total
defense. I do know that when I upgraded my HoZ, the defense only went
up 15 points, not worth the extra strength, or runes, for most builds,
but needed for a smiter.

upgrading uniques is always an upgrade of the base item. Let's say you have
the unique spear Hone Sundan, which has the exceptional class Yari. You
could upgrade this to the elite Ghost Spear, which deals much more damage.
OTOH, DEX requirement goes up 163.

This site (in german, but with english item names) shows all uniques, and
the thumbs up icon shows the upgraded version:

Here you can calculate the stats of each item in each version (normal,
exceptional, unique), uniques and runewords:

For Exceptional to Elite upgrades of uniques you'll need:

weapon: LUM, PUL and PEmerald + unique (Ladder or SP only)
armour: KO, LEM and PDiamond + unique (Ladder or SP only).

Very few uniques are worth upgrading, and many will get very steep stat
requirements.

Larzuk will socket your uniques, but they will only get one socket.

The only unique that I have done both for, upgrade and socketing, is
Duriel's Shell. This raises it to about 1500 def and the free socket could
be used for %IAS jewels or more resists or whatever.. And as the elite
Duriel's is only a Great Hauberk, stat requirements aren't very steep.

I'd suggest using areat summit, seeing as how its blizz's official site with
the straight scoop, I have seen in the past where diabloii.net has screwed
up and posted false and misleading information. anytime you have questions
about the game, most regular info can be found on the arreat summit and you
can count on it being the straight scoop.
