i updated my win 8 to 10. did a clean reinstal after so no old stuff would be there.

but now i want to sell my laptop to a friend. how ever i dont want him using my microsoft account
can i factory reset to win 10. if not can i update it back to 10 again as the key is on the laptop.

or

can i just remove the laptop in my microsoft acount and leave it at a clean instal >?

I know you can deactivate devices in settings/update & security/activation but I am not sure if you can do it on the device you currently using or if you would have to do it on another PC

Have a look in there now and see what windows says about your current activation, is it linked to your Microsoft account? If it isn't linked to an account, the easiest way to remove your login info off PC and leave it brand new is a factory reset.

The licence for win 10 has to remain on the laptop. It belongs to laptop. The lifetime upgrade to win 10 is for the laptop, its not for you.

If you buy a new PC it will need a new licence.

If the current activation is linked to your Microsoft account, then when you get the new PC you will have to remove...

thanks colif. you sort of answered my question.

so basicly i do a clean reinstal of windows 10. leave it at the setting up phase and remove the laptop from my microsoft account. so my friend has to make his own Microsoft account

i would set up an account in his name but not linked to an email address, just so PC can load to desktop. I wouldn't leave it in the set up phase in case it doesn't continue. He can link it to a microsoft account or make one after the fact.

it was on standby by handing it over. worked like a charm
if i had to power it down i would have done that as well.
