I have an external usb 3.0 hard drive case that I've placed a 1TB 2.5" sata hard drive inside. It reads just fine but transferring does horrible. I have it plugged into the USB 3.0 port and I'm using a blue USB 3.0 wire. When I transfer files roughly a mixture of all sorts of sizes that total in around 109 GBs, it starts out at 20 mb/s then quickly drops to 335 kb/s and then sits at zero then bumps up to 335 kb/s again and repeats. I've tried going into device manger and clicking on better performance but it does the same thing.
I ran crystaldiskinfo and here's what I get.

Positive, here's a link to the laptop I'm using. I just bought it 2 days ago.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo---15.6%26%2334%3B-Laptop---4GB-Memory---500GB-Hard-Drive/9130065.p?id=1218990135826&skuId=9130065

There are two blue usb 3.0 on the left side I have the external hardrive plugged into one of them, the 2.0 is on the right side with my mouse plugged in, so the hard drive is the only thing plugged into the left side using the 3.0 ports.

Yes, the two usb 3.0 ports do the same exact thing. The 2.0 on the right starts out even lower around 5 mb/s and then does the whole drop thing as well.

The external hard drive I'm trying to transfer to I formatted today, so it had 931 GB of free space in NTFS format, right now after waiting pretty much all day transferring stuff it now has 859 GB of free space.

My internal hard drive is a 500 GB drive and it has 237 GB of free space

No problem, thanks for trying though. Hopefully someone else can help me.

You mean hook it up to another computer and transfer something? If so I'll try my wife's computer tomorrow and update on what happens.

Tried it on my wifes computer and it does the same speed as what my computer doing if not worst, except her computer only has usb 2.0. Before I bought this external hard drive all the reviews said it works fine, there was only like 1 or 2 bad reviews and they were just about the case itself, no one complained about the speed.

When I copy from the external to my internal, speeds are fast, up to 100 mb/s and works fine, it's just copying to the external that it does what I said.

I'm not sure what to do about the bad health status though under the crystaldiskinfo, it shows two things wrong, Reallocated Sectors Count and Current Pending Sector Count, I'm not sure what those mean or how to fix those either.

Is there a way to fix it or is this hard drive junk?

Do this: Find the My Computer icon on your desktop and double-click it;
Find the disk you want to check, right-click it and go to Properties;
In the Properties dialog box go to Tools;
Click Check now;
A new dialog box will appear, check both options and click Start;
Most likely you will get a message that Check Disk wants exclusive access to the disk and wants to start right after your reboot. Click OK;
Restart your computer.

After that there really isn't much you can do, get what you need off of the hard drive, multiple bad sectors will eventually lead to catastrophic failure

I'm on Windows 8, there was no options to check off, but I did check now and let it scan but it found 0 errors.

I am having the same problem here but experiencing even lower speeds. I wonder if the transfer speeds in the progress bar are not reporting correctly. I am copying a 600GB folder to an external USB 3 1TB hard-drive and according to progress bar which is continually slowing down (now at 74 KB/second) this job should take several days. However when I checked the size of the destination folder it's already more then 75GB in 30 minutes of transfer. That's roughly 2.5GB/minute. The source folder has many files of various types and sizes - could it be that the progress bar has problems estimating such fragmented source? Try adding all files into a single archive (.zp, .7z, etc) - without compressing this should not take long. Then try copying again and see if the dialog box transfer rate is still slowing down.

Update: A few hours later the speed in the progress bar is dropping but the actual file size of the folder that's being copied is 560GB which is consistent with the 2.5GB/minute transfer I estimated. (it will take 4 hours to copy a 600GB folder) The progress bar is now reporting speeds that are closer to 14.4kb/s dial up mode rather then USB3.

I have a similiar problem here.
Every time i plug my external drive, the autorun is so slow.
And every time i want to open folder, i must wait 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
It happens for transferring data too.

Any idea to fix my problem?

I am having similar trouble with ALL my Toshiba drives running on the usb 3.0 ports, I discovered the ANTEC pci card has power issues and so does the Toshibas, Seagate goflex's (on the docks) and Hitachi internals.

With the 3 tb Toshiba the drive has to be turned off and cool down to avoid the problem and the usb 3.0 cable has to remain plugged in to the DRIVE side to avoid wear and tear on the poor quality cabling that Toshiba includes (that has been that solution)

With the Seagate GoFlex (on docks) you cannot hot swap, the cable rule appys as above and when the docks burn out from the antec power issue they will simple always run at usb 2.0 speed, so you need to get on eBay and buy some more docks.

The Hitachi internals (2 tb, 3tb and 1 tb) and Toshiba internals (2 tb tested) are a danger to use with the antec since they will bad sector on you, then youll be running chkdsk /F all the time.

The Manufacturers of both cards and drives are getting so cheap that where one barely makes the grade you MAY have issues, but when both borderline and natural issues from failing internal power supplies, apc backups, bad power spikes and drops simply accumulate to cause these transient errors, now even on my favorite seagates (thusfar the older Seagate backup plus's run w/o any issues at all)

Jey if there is a clever fix like a software wedge in the os to detect fade outs of power and talk to the pci card or hd to get the voltage up I am all ears, God I miss the Perstor Company, they gave full control to the admin for all power regulation on HD's, what a loss.
