Hello,

I bought a new webcam for my PC. I installed it into one of the usb 3.0 ports in the back of my computer. Now whenever I try to turn on my PC it hangs at the Intel Splash Screen. If I want to turn the computer on I need to manually reset the machine and then it works fine. I was just wondering how a webcam can cause an issue such as this.

The drivers for the 3.0 ports are all updated, the only thing I haven't done is redo the boot order in the BIOS. Whenever I unplug the webcam the computer starts up fine. Can someone please explain this?

Thank you

As well as setting or checking what the boot order of devices are making sure the boot drive, be it a SSD drive or a HDD is set to be looked at before any usb based device that may be causing the hanging.

Check to see what type of USB port speed the new webcam works with.

If it states it is a Usb 2.0 port device then you should not be plugging it into a usb 3.0 port of your system Chris.
Also check in your bios if enable detection of usb legacy devices option is set to enabled.

As if it is not with some devices that use usb 2.0 will cause the system to lock when placed in a usb 3,0 port where the option in the bios for legacy detection of usb devices is disabled.

Often it is because the usb device is only 2.0 spec like the new...

Often it is because the usb device is only 2.0 spec like the new webcam you bought. and when plugged into the usb 3.0 port the bios cannot workout what it is even though connected, so the system locks at booting or the bios splash screen Chris.

You can always tell what speed a usb device runs at in port speed by the colour of the plastic tongue inside of it.

Usb 1.1 is always a white tab, or keyed
Usb 2.0 is always a black tab, or keyed

And Usb 3.0 to 3.1 is yup yes you guessed it always a Blue tab, or keyed
Plastic tongue.
