I recently put together a build with the Gigabyte mobo. After getting everything running and installed I noticed the USB 3.0 ports not working correctly. As a n00b to the field, I googled and researched what might be the problem. I went to the BIOS and made sure it was enabled. I went to the device manager, uninstalled, and reinstalled the ports. Initially, I loaded the drives from the CD, but I downloaded the drivers from the website and I'm getting a funky message about the hardware not being available, but I'm able to run some of the other driver applications with no problem. So I'm officially stumped.

The funny thing about it all, it will charge my phone and other devices if its connected to the port, but will not recognize the device.

Again, to make sure I didn't lose anyone in the wall of text. I have a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P mobo. My USB 3.0 is enabled in BIOS and Device Manager recognizes the ports because there are only three. I uploaded the drivers from the CD. Downloaded the drivers and ran them, but the app will not work.

What the muff should I do next? Thank you in advance.

Hello guys, Nice to see so many sharing the same problem I have, and great suggestions.
I recently (1 week back) bought a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P mobo, as all have been saying even my USB 3.0 ports stopped working after few installations of several softwares. However initially it worked till a point. So i suspect that some software or utilities I installed are the culprit. So currently in troubleshooting mode, once solved will update soon.

hi there, new to the forum. to cut a long story sort, same problem with usb3 ports. i saved the usb3 driver folder from temp as suggested and tried to upgrade usb drivers from all usb ports, by pointing to that folder. nothing could be installed because it seemed fine windows said. usb3 ports work fine,i even installed the usb 3 drivers by gigabyte again. the problem is that after 2-3 restarts, the usb3 ports wont work again and they will again disappear from device manager. any help?

Okay guys, I was having the same problem and got it figured out. After an update of the drivers my USB 3.0 ports did not work AT ALL. They wouldn't even show up in device manager, even though they were enabled in the BIOS. What I had to do was download the Chipset Drivers, and run the main Setup file. In there, I re-installed the USB Filter. My ports then showed up in device manager, and I updated them to 4.40. I am going to try 4.90 again at some point but don't want to go through the hassle if it doesn't work.

Hope this helps!

You have my thanks! This solution (unplug from power ) really solved my problem. This may be a glitch of the mobo.

well after reinstalling chipset drivers, it work for some time but now again no usb3. only after i unplug thye cord but after 2-3 restarts, no usb3 again... hope someone adds asolution

Lo pude solucionar instalando la versión 4.90 de vía y aunque tira error la instalacion hay que dejar conectado el dispositivo usb 3.0 y reiniciar la pc. Cuando arranca se instala sólo.

Thanks for your hint, just adding one more:
If you don't want to install the demanding Catalyst Install Manager, .NET and all the stuff, just extract the setup (7zip). The driver is located at

Code:
chipset_win\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\Filter\NB\W764A
and be careful to select proper bit version (W7 vs W764A...)! Don't use "Include subfolders". That would select the 32 bit version.
Do a manual driver update on System devices/PCI bus. It will then read AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver.

I had to do the power down trick recently. The USB3 disappeared when I plugged in an USB3 disk and the installation took forever, so I had to restart. After the trick they reappeared again.

Now I'm testing with the above mentioned USB filter driver (chipset)

Filter driver version: 1.3.1.49 (web: 13.125)
USB3 driver version: 6.1.7600.4903 (web: V4.90A)

Will post, when they disappear again 😉

Just realized, there is an BIOS update available promising better "USB 3.0 compatibility" on Gigabyte website for GA-970A-DS3P.
Version FC for rev. 2.0 MOBO:
http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5216#bios

Unfortunately I have only rev. 1.0 board and there is an beta version F2j BIOS update (no USB3 promises):
http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4591#bios

There is also a bios update utility which runs under Windows called atBIOS (@BIOS)!
Extract 970ADS3P.F2j from the BIOS zip file and flash it. The utility clears CMOS by deafult, so remember your settings!

Everything worked smoothly for me, so I keep evaluating the disappearing USBs... So far so good...

Running well for almost 1 month now.

So to sum it up: (refer to previous posts)
[listNum]
■ I saw just 7 USB2 hubs and no USB3: I turned off the computer, unplugged power, "turned it on", plugged the power back in and turned it on.
■ 3 devices reappeared: XHCI controller, USB3 hub and 8th USB2 hub. I installed them from USB3 driver package.
■ I installed the PCI bus from the chipset drivers.
■ I updated the BIOS (version F2j for my rev1.0 motherboard)
[/listNum]
Since then the USB3 didn't disappear again. Usually it happened, when I plugged in a new USB3 device. Not happening anymore. Yayyy!! 😀

Hi Everyone,
I was having the USB Controller for the USB 3.0 Ports problem also. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I tried the updated driver, also to no avail. I'm staring at my screen and it hit me. Not the screen, rather the solution. I noticed the time and date in the corner and it read pm but should have been am. Went to BIOS and sure enough, it is a 24 hour clock. I reset it to the proper time and restarted. Voile' the driver updated successfully and the USB 3.0 Ports are now working fine.

I'm sure this is not everyone's solution as I am sure most of you are smart enough to not let that slip past you when setting up a new board. I hope it helps someone though.

Hi I've upgraded to Windows 10 and since the USB 3.0 didn't give much problem at all, but before that I found a solution in the net where you just need to power down your pc, unplug it, wait for half an hour. Then power back on...just that. But make sure you had the chipset driver installed first before anything else.

This tip was already mentioned, thank you though. To speed things up, you can unplug your computer and just push power button to discharge the board. Then you can plug it back in immediately.

I had to do this like 2 times since my last post (6 months), so it's not so bothering anymore. The before mentioned driver upgrade solved the problem. It's a bit buggy board :-/

Win7 here.

I had the same problem, but I solved it by installing VIA USB 3.0 drivers version 4.30A. Any version above that seems to cause the problem, I don't know why. But with 4.30A drivers it works.

I keep seeing all the same runaround answers to this problem, and had the same exact problem myself, and spent all day messing with it the dead USB3.0 ports on a new Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P (rev2.1) mobo. I finally typed that board info into a google search and added the words "driver download" and a link came up to Softpedia. I went to Softpedia and it said that the driver was specifically for the USB3.0 controller for this motherboard. I downloaded the driver at this link:

http://drivers.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php/1e81b8bc0fc22b12ecaf48b732fd34b7/5b36519f/8e0e6/4/1

It took all of about 5 minutes to download it, run the install and reboot. Now ALL USB3.0 ports work fine, including a cheap add-on Kingwin cable to pci bracket I added to move two USB3.0 ports from a top front panel, to the rear.

Dear disasterman5
TODAY YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No need to read any of this page! Just do only what you said: Download the SOFTPEDIA Driver: VIA XHCI Host Controller Driver V4.20B.

This USB Driver solved my year long battle with not having USB3.0. Ive only had usb2.0 until today. As a bonus my older usb mouse is now wicked responsive and the curser stays confined to the window perimeter. Never knew this was possible!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME disasterman5 !!!
........................................................
NOTE to all:
Make sure to:

1) Put "usb mouse" and keyboard(if needed) on a usb2.0 port temporarily because your 3.0 ports will be dead for next step.
2) uninstall previous VIA Driver (mine was Gigabytes most recent "not working" VIA USB 3.0 Driver v4.90A).
3) Reboot
4) Install disasterman5's VIA XHCI Host Controller Driver V4.20B (not the other V4.20 ...make sure its the V4.20"B" Version!!)
5) Reboot
6)Thank disasterman5 !!!!
