During transferring large files (ex. 4gb) from computer hard drive to a usb stick..
using a usb 3.0 port..

The file transfer starts out at 150+ mb/sec.. The "progress bar" shoots out to about half way.. then the speed starts slowing down.. and slowing down.. and slowing down.. eventually reaching about 12 mb/sec.

Taking about 10-15 minutes for a 4gb file transfer.

Whats wrong?

Whats wrong is likely your understanding of the process. The progress bar is not a good indication of speed as it is easily fooled by initial writes to buffers. The whole transfer process only proceeds at the pace of the slowest device in the chain. This could be your usb3 drive, where the source file is located (ie: what device its on), or the usb3 implementation on your computer (not all of them can actually support 450mb/s speeds).

I understand the progress bar..
But.. are the speeds its telling me not accurate? starting off at 150mbs and ending up at 12??

I dont even really care about 450mbs speeds.. but I do care about 12mbs. 150 would be fine with me.. but when my 3.0 speed is the same as my 2.0. .. then I wonder why.

Its doubtful its the hardware (unless the setup is wrong) The system is new that I build myself. Asus maximus formula vi board.. samsung ssd

What im not sure of is the thumb drive itself.. its a hp 16gb (bought last year)

Its probably the thumbdrive. Without a specific model# we have no what to really know. Grab a new one with known benchmarks results. Heres Toms test of a bunch of them:

AS for the hardware, be sure the front usb3's, if thats what you are using, are definitely connected to the usb3 headers on the motherbd and not to the usb2 which are also there.
