[SOLVED] usb 3.0 rear panel to usb 2.0 header on mobo?

Can a usb 3.0 rear panel plug into a usb 2.0 plug on motherboard and work as a usb 2.0 connector? I am asking as i have a spare usb 3.0 panel connector i may purchase as a bundle and don’t want to waste.
