USB 3.0 SATA Hard drive not recognized Windows 10

I recently purchased a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 hard drive and a Sabrent USB 3.0 SATA Hard Drive flat docking station to connect via usb to my Dell XPS L702x laptop. Upon putting the hard drive in the external enclosure and connecting to my laptop via usb my computer is not recognizing this external hard drive in disk management. I can see it in device manager and it is listed as "Jmicron SCSI Disk Device". I can also see it in devices and printer listed as "Jmicron". However it is not recognized or listed in disk management and file explorer. I am a novice when it comes to hardware issues as I am more of a software guy but I have tried everything I can find on the net to no avail. ie uninstalling and installing the drivers, using seagate utilities (I cannot also see it in Seagates applications), disabling fast startup, windows devices and printers troubleshooting, etc. I suspect (maybe incorrectly) that this device is showing up as "Jmicron SCSI disk device" instead of a SATA drive but that is coming from someone who again does not know alot about the device/hardware side. I would like to make this external drive a full backup for my windows 10 laptop and any assistance that could be provided would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for any help you may be!

Cole_9 Thanks for following up with me. I appreciate it. Actually just figured this out. What I did was plug the external hard drive into an older dell I have running windows 7 and this machine recognized it in disk management. However would not let me assign a drive letter for it - would only let me "delete volume". So i did some thinking on this and not really knowing if I initialzed it or not took a chance and deleted volume for this drive. It gave me some created by "non microsoft" warning when I was doing this and it advised it was not recoverable. SO I deleted, was able to assign it a drive letter, format drive and then I unplugged and took it to my windows 10 machine and it recognized it right away. Doing a full system backup on...
try unplugging the device and see if device manager still shows the SCSI disk device. If it does not, then close out of device manager and try plugging the device in and see if the SCSI disk device shows in the device manager once you reopen it..
 
Are you using the power supply module that came with the Sabrent unit? The HDD you have uses more power than can be supplied by a USB3 port.

A USB3 port can supply up to 0.9 amps. The HDD specs say it needs 1 amp to start up, and well over 2 amps to read and write. The devices sold as "Laptop USB3 Drives" are specifically designed to work fully with no more than 0.9 amps available. To do that they make several sacrifices on HDD performance. But you have assembled your own unit, and the HDD you chose needs more power than it can get from the USB3 port (By the way, USB2 ports supply significantly less power.)

That is why the Sabrent unit came with its own power supply. Unfortunately I can't find the specs on what the module can supply, so I'm just assuming it can do better than a USB3 port. Anyway, make sure you use that included power supply module to power the Sabrent unit, and maybe it will work then.
 
Paperdoc Tes I am using the power supply that came with the Sabrent unit. That is what I thought may be the problem as I was using a enclosure only ORICO that I had picked up awile ago. Swithing the enclosures and using the Sabrent with the power supply did not resolve the problem. It is a Sabrent EC-DFLT.

Cole_9 followed your instructions above and when I unplugged the device it did remove SCSI disk device from device manager. I closed out device manager, re-opened it and plugged my external drive back into the laptop,. The SCSI device did not reappear and I also did a right click device scan from device manager and it still did not appear. The whole time I left the Sabrent enclosure powered up.

One more thing that I should mention that I suspect (coming from someone who is a novice at best in this area) I also have a SD Micro card inserted into my micro slot and it shows in device manager as JMCR SD/MMC SCSI Device. It also is showing in disk management and file explorer. Could this be "interfering" with my external drive? (sorry best description I could think of)

UPDATE: After doing what Cole_9 instructed above and not doing anything from there I went back into device manager and was looking around and found the following: Clicking on storage controllers there was an exclaimation mark (!) by USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device. Going to properties on this and under device status I get the following message: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory (Code 38)". I suspect (hope) that this may have something to do with my problem but am unsure of how to fix. Also in the driver "log" it looks like the drivers were loaded for this yesterday - 9/15/16.

 
Well at least now we know the computer is recognizing the drive some way or another. If it says that there is another instance of a driver already on the PC, try uninstalling the driver(s) entirely with the device unplugged and then try plugging the device back in and see if it will reinstall the drivers.
 
Cole_9 Before I got your reply I found instructions on the error code that I was receiving to uninstall all the usb root hubs in device manager, shut down the computer, let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes and then reboot and plug in my external drive. I did this and still not seeing it in disk management and explorer. however it is in device manager and devices and printers as before. also in storage controllers under USB attached scsi (uas) mass storage device is showing that it is working properly. SO would you suggest that I still try uninstalling the drivers entirely with the device unplugged? If so, how do you do that? I only know how to uninstall drivers via device manager under the devices properties. So the device would have to be plugged in. Right? is there another way? Thanks for your help!
 
Well tried that to no avail. U installed and reinstalled both the device driver and the USB attached scsi mass storage device. I was doing some more surfing and came up with a program called driver talent and it has the option at looking at your peripheral drivers which detects your connected usb devices. It detects my external hard drive but in the details it indicates: Type:Unknown
Name:USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device
MFR:JMicron
Description:USB Attached SCSI (UAS) Mass Storage Device ------------ Again not knowing alot about the hardware side of life I am wondering why it list it as an "unknown" device? Not sure if this will help but thought I would mention. Thanks again for your HELP!
 
Hello! Sorry about my absence for the last couple of days! First thing you should try is uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the device on the desktop. With the device plugged in, go into device manager, right click it, select properties, then click uninstall drivers, close out of device manager, unplug and replug the device back into the USB slot again. It should install the drivers automatically once you plug the device in
