Hi,

First time builder here, got the Corsair 4000x case and MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard. I was originally going to use the Corsair 4000D Case (which had no warning on PCPartPicker), but arrived in a scenario where I was able to get the 4000x for free. PCPart picker is telling me that "A USB 3.2 Gen 2 to USB 3.2 Gen 1 header adapter is required". I've found a lot about USB Gen 1 to Gen 2 headers, but I can't seem to find much about the Gen 2 to Gen 1. What exactly does this mean? Do I only need the header if I want to take advantage of the USB Gen 2 header on my motherboard (i.e. case port will it will act as a Gen 1 without it)? Or will the USB port on my case flat out not work without it? Thanks!

Refer to page 34 of your motherboard Quick Start manual; you have 2 types of usb3 connectors, JUSB1 and JUSB2. Refer to page 9 of your case manual; you have 2 types of usb3 plugs. Simply insert the matching plugs in the matching receptacles and you should be fine. You should not need any adapters.

Thanks! Great. So just to confirm, is USB 3.2 Gen 1 the same as USB 3.1?

The difference between usb ports is the data transfer speed. The speed can be 5Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s or 20Gbit/s. So if you're transferring large amounts of data onto a usb stick or usb ssd you want to use the port with the highest number, usually the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 which is the type C port on the front of your case which has the special connector JUSB1 on your motherboard.
