USB controller not working in-game?

I recently bought a USB Gamepad, but it isn't recognised in games. I know it's not a problem with the gamepad, because I've used it on my boyfriends laptop on the same game I'm trying to play (Rogue Legacy) and it works fine. But on my laptop it doesn't seem to recognise it. When I go into control panel settings and collaborate it works fine - the computer is recognising which buttons I'm using on the gamepad, etc. But it will not work in-game!

Any help?

have you set control bindings in the game settings? Probably a silly question but just to make sure

I don't think you can... I've looked through the settings on Rogue Legacy and it doesn't have many. When I used my boyfriends laptop I just had to plug the controller in for it to work.

well I'm not sure what the problem is then :\ the only thing I've used my USB controller for is emulation and it's not even the same brand, I'll bump this thread hoping that someone else knows the answer though
