Hey guys.

PLEASE help me figure out what is causing this!

I just built my brand-new rig that I use for video editing and gaming. I bought the MSI X99A gaming pro carbon motherboard with Intel core i7 6800k with several an ssd boot drive, and 5 HDDs a for storage.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit. Here is a compete list of my system.

This is one of many of my system builds. I have never experienced in my entire life and issue like this before, and I'm at the end if my roap 26th this. Everything's been going fine as I've been building the system the last couple days.I have been doing successful benchmarks, stress test, and even rendered some full 1080 P 60 frames per second video without any issue.

As I completed the build today, I was using my computer to play a couple PC games. All of a sudden I kept hearing the sound that Windows makes when you plug in and unplug the USB port. it kept doing it over and over and over again.

So I decided to do a search on Google, and have tried every single thing I can find and nothing has worked. Every time the usb sound is made, a little box pops up in the lower right-hand corner of my screen that gives me a message about the device being unrecognizable.

When I go to the device manager, it shows me all my USB ports are active but there's a yellow examination point on one of them and it gives me this error that says USB Device descriptor failed.

All the devices that I had plugged into the computer at the time were fully operational and did not experience any interruptions.

I first went into the PowerManager settings and disabled the USB feature in the power settings so the USB ports cannot be turned off. That did not work. I then turned off the computer and unplugged all the USB ports and even unplug the power supply, and push the power button down for 10 seconds while it was unplugged like it was suggested for me to do on a Google search To clear any possible USB connections that were not completely made properly. I left it unplugged for a few minuets afterwards. I then plugged the power supply and video cables Back into it, and turned it on. I waited until booted up to my screen name sign in, and then plug in the mouse and the keyboard. I then put in my username and password, and then looked in the device manager and it was still saying that it could not find the device. It eventually started popping up the error message in the lower right-hand corner of the screen again as well as making a constant sound that something was being plugged into and un plugged from USB ports.

I opened up my case and unplugged the 3.0 connector for the front panel as well as a 2.0 connector for the front panel and rebooted. That did not work. I went into the bios and turned off a couple of USB options that were listed there , and that didn't work. I went into the bios and loaded optimized defaults and that did not work.

In device manager I right-clicked on The device that was not recognizable and I click uninstall. It would then refresh itself and pop back up. I tried disabling the device, and it still pooped up the Unrecognizable error. I tried to update drivers for it, it could not find any because it cannot recognize the device.

Is there something I have not tried, and is there anybody else that has seen this kind of error before???

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I just installed all my software and the operating system, and would rather not have to go through that process again. Thank you.

Hi,

Simple trick but give it a go - Blow the usb ports, also switch the usbs you already have plugged in to other ports and see if same issue occurs. Try swap out keyboard and mouse.

One of those should fix the issue :)

Thank you so much for the reply. At this point I will try anything. I worked hard on this build all week, and when it wasn't doing this, it was working like a dream.

It's to early to celebrate, but prior to booting up this morning, I did as you said and took compressed air to the USB ports, and then plugged in a wireless mouse/keyboard use antenna (I can't find my other wired keyboards).

After boot up, the device manager is showing me no issues under the USB section, however, it went away for a little bit last night after updating all the MB drivers to the latest from MSI's website, but eventually it came back.

Now, hopefully, this USB issue is over with, but now a new issue has popped up. Before I decided to re-install windows, I noticed my ehternet icon in the lower left hand corner started showing a yellow exclamation point, indicating it was limited and it was connected to an unidentified network, The only way I can get it to stop doing that is if I plug my modem directly to it. My wireless router connected to it brings up the limited/unidentified network issue. I tried the built in network diagnostics where it will refresh the port, and it won't fix the issue. I unplugged the router for a couple mins, and plugged it back in, and it still won't work. I have to plug directly into my modem, and that means I can't get access to my NAS device.

Any suggestions on this? So far (knock on wood) my usb issue isn't coming back, but like I said, it came came back after EVERYTHING I tried last night.....

Thanks a million for the reply. I really hope I can get back to video editing today, as I am falling behind on projects.

Thanks for the tip. I don't think any of the ports are broken. This is a brand new setup. New board, new case, ect. Everything was working fine up until yesterday afternoon.

It seems to have stopped after I tried Kavster001 suggestions. I blew out the USB ports, which I am not sure that was the fix, but I unplugged my mouse and keyboard, and then plugged in a wireless USB mouse/keybaord antenna. It hasn't done it since (KNOCK ON WOOD).

But now, I am having issues withe the eithernet port limiting my connection. It shows it's connected but it has the yellow exclamation point on it. I tried the windows diagnostics and it reset the port, but it won't work. The only time I got it to connect to the internet was when I disconnected the port from the router and went directly to my modem. Everything else is talking to my router just fine. All my wifi is working, as well as my connect NAS storage device.

I unplugged every single cable. I did a power down of the modem, the router, and my NAS device and left them all unplugged for a few minuets. I then hooked the modem back up to the internet line, the plugged in the router. Once those established connections, I plugged in my NAS device and got that back online. Then I plugged the eithernet cable back into my PC and the connection is still limited. I tried 2 different cables as well.

This issue started last night, just prior to me re-installing windows to try and fix the USB problem. So even after a re-install, it's doing it.

I am grabbing all the latest driver's from MSI's website and using them instead of the install disc. Still no luck with the ethernet port.,

ya my machine was new also, just turned out one of the 12 USB ports did not work and I was never able to get it working correctly. I just used the other ports.

With you ethernet I assume you are talking about your onboard intel network chip.
make sure you have updated the driver and that the driver is actually selected as the default driver.
(you can have several network drivers installed, but the old one may still be selected as the default, you might have to use control panel device manager to select the correct version)

driver date 5-6-2016

looks like your motherboard put out some BIOS fixes just after 10 days from the last fix.

Thanks for the reply again John. I went to MSI's website and downloaded all the latest drivers already and made sure they where the ones I installed right after I re-installed windows. I seem to have no issues getting net access through the Ethernet port if I plug it it directly into the modem, but connecting to my router is giving me the unidentified network issue. It just randomly started last night.

I did a power cycle on all my gear. I unplugged the modem and the router from the power outlet, and unplugged everything connected to them. Waited a few minuets and one by one started powering everything back on. I get WIFI from the router without any issues at all on all the phones and game systems in the house, and I can even connect a USB wifi adaptor to the computer having the Ethewrnet port issue and get access to everything that way, including my attached NAS device.

The Ethernet port just won't establish a connection to my router.

are you using more than one network connection at a time?
ie if you stop your wireless connection can you wired connection work correctly?
windows would normally stop the slowest device by default unless you make certain setting changes.

If you are asking if I am using the Wifi USB adapter and the Ethernet port at the same time on the same machine, then yes, at the moment I am. But if I connect just the Ethernet port to the computer from the router, it won't identify the connection. If I bybass the router and connect my modem directly to the Ethernet port, I get access to the net. It's only when connecting the router via Ethernet that it doesn't seem to work.

MORE DETAILS: I am just using the modem directly into the Ethernet port now. It connected, and I am online, but my speeds are WICKED slow! I am suppose to bet getting 60mbps from my ISP. I get those speeds on my Galaxy S7 phone through the wifi on Speedtest.net but my Ethernet port is only getting 8mbps.

Ok, so I am not sure what I did that actually fixed it, but here is what I did.

I updated the bios to the latest version and rebooted. It was still doing it. Then, I opened up network sharing and uninstalled the driver for the Ethernet port and rebooted. I installed the driver again, and rebooted. It was still doing it. I then switched to an Ethernet cable I knew was working for sure with it when everything was running smoothly the other day. As soon as I plugged it in, it recognized the connection, I am back up and running like normal and I am getting 60+ mbps download times.

I took it a step further, and took that cable off the port (it doesn't clip in like it's suppose because the pieces are broken off hence why I try not to use it much.) I then took the cable I previously had on it when it was not working properly, and it still connected just fine.

So I am not sure what did it exactly. Maybe the BIOS update followed by the re-installing of the drivers? I used the same driver when I reinstalled windows which is the latest driver from MSI.

Could have been a bad install on the driver the first time or a common issue that he motherboard bios fixed. Either way, I am glad you are big free and it is working!

Thank you guys so much for the suggestions. ESPEICIALY the changing out the mouse and keyboard one. It was boggeling my mind that even with no USB devices being plugged in, it was STILL saying there was an un-recognizable USB device connecting and disconnecting.

I have not gone back to my other keyboard/ mouse yet in fear it might start that un-recognizable USB garbage again. But I think it may have just something hung up in windows that got resolved/reset when I tried the other mouse/keyboard. Idk... I have seen some wacky crap this last 12 hours with this that I have never seen before. 2 issues back to back, and a massive headache later, and I think I am good to go..... I just wanna get back to work with editing my videos ha

THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!

It only did it one time, but it still did it. And I tried all of that last night. I tried disabling it and uninstalling it and it kept turning itself back on and re-enabling itself.

It only did in once earlier, but now it is back again and not going away. All I have been doing is installing software. I plugged the original mouse and keyboard in, and everything was fine, and now it's showing Device Descriptor Failed again in the same spot it was doing it last night.

If I right click on it and disable it, it comes right back. If I uninstall it, it comes right back.

In the bios under USB configuration, it gives me options to enable or disable the following:

-USB Support
-XHCI Hand off
-UHCI Handoff
-Legacy USB Support

all of these are currently set as enabled. Should one of them be disabled?

He's having the same exact issue, but his fix isn't helping me unfortunately. I downloaded the last BIOS from MSI's website and I installed them by going to the bios to do it.

Ok, so I have done more and more digging, and I have discovered that I am not alone in this issue! That at least makes me feel better.

Over at the MSI's official forum, I found this post, and this guy is having the SAME exact issue, and took all the same steps to try and fix it.

https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=pj752n2ui7d5n55padg7htts31&topic=272653.0

A potential fix was suggested by one of the people who responded with the same issue. What he did was went into Device manager, click 'view' and then click 'show hidden devices.' In that list was a few USB devices, and 2 of them had the same "Device descriptor failed" error next to them. What he did was right clicked on them, and then clicked uninstall. He said he has done several reboots and everything seems okay so far a few hours in.

So I applied this to my system, and so far we're issue free.... for how long? I am not sure. But I plan on calling MSI this week and bringing this to their attention if they are not fully aware of the issue.
