So I installed Windows 8.1 on my new SSD (no other hardware changes), and since then my USB devices are randomly disconnecting and reconnecting. I've searched the forum prior to this and haven't found a working solution, so any help is hugely appreciated.

My current specs are:
Gigabyte 970A-DS3
AMD Phenom II 965 BE
8GB DDR3 RAM
GTX 550 Ti
Cooler Master GX 650W

Thanks for reading! :)

Notes:
there is a AMD chipset update and a USB 3.0 port update for your board
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4122#dl

you can get the same effect if your USB port is grounded to your case or you have a bad usb device.
-your motherboard has 12 usb ports supported by the AMD chipset (usb 2.0)
and 2 ports supported by the Etron EJ168 chip: (usb 3.0)

if the problem happens on the usb 3.0 port you would update the Etron EJ168 chip driver
if the problem is on the usb 2.0 you update the AMD chipset drivers.

(most likely windows 8.1 has a generic usb 3 driver and not your custom Etron EJ168 driver, I would look there)

Are you using (charging) an apple USB device on your system. Apple devices pull twice the max allowed current for charging via PC USB. If you use the default USB driver it may detect that as a short circuit to the hub and reset it.

(fix would be to use a custom USB driver that many PCs now have for apple devices but you have to get it from your motherboard vendor)

Solution
Did you check power management in the properties of the usb root hubs? I found out in there my PC had auto allowed to turn off this device to safe power, but as you can imagine, it was turning my keyboard, mouse and wifi off randomly so wasn't able to work with it all. After turning this off, didn't happen anymore.

I have a similar problem on my Asus Z97-A motherboard, but I have been able to narrow down the problem. Read on for something interesting...

1) For me, the problem is only with SOME USB 3.0 devices like Card readers and external harddrives (some multidtrive USB 3.0 readers do work, some HDs are temperamental about when they will work) - this is all very weird.
2) But the most weird thing is that the problem only occurs when I join my windows 8.1 pro pc to a domain, as soon as I take it off the domain, the problem goes away - this seems to imply that the domain group policies have something to do with it. But why then do some drives work on and off?

I tried the power options as described in the post (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2335635/usb-drives-disconnected-reconnected-usb-work-great-usb.html)
and I have tried disabling XHCI as described in the post (http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1885037/windows-usb-devices-disconnect-reconnect-power-saving.html)

None of the above worked.
